Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition Officially Announced

The Old World is stirring once again. In a recent blog post, publisher Cubicle 7 has confirmed that Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition is officially in development and scheduled for release in 2026 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the classic grimdark roleplaying game.

It’s been less than a decade since the previous fourth edition was released back in 2018, but according to Cubicle 7 the new WFRP 5e will be fully backwards compatible, while also addressing a number of key issues with the previous ruleset. Below, we break out everything we know so far.

What’s changing in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition?

A recent post on the Cubicle 7 blog revealed the new cover, some interior art and offered some details on what will be included:

  • Five distinct Character types (Old World Human, Dwarf, Halfling, wood Elf and High Elf)
  • 64 distinct careers, representing the way of life your Character follows when not adventuring.
  • A guide to the major religions of the Old World and the miracles performed by the Priests of these pantheons.
  • Spells from several different magical traditions.
  • A bestiary of foe (both common and scarce)
  • Advice on running games as a GM.

Fans of the current Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fourth Edition can also breathe easy: fifth edition won’t be overhauling the core mechanics that define the game. Instead, CEO Dominic McDowall emphasized that WFRP 5E will remain fully backwards compatibility with four edition. This includes retain the iconic D100 system that has defined the game since its inception (something which wasn’t carried over to the recent Warhammer Fantasy Old World Roleplaying Game, which introduced a new D10 dice pool system).

And while others details are still coming, we do know a few of the broad strokes that we can expect in WFRP 5e:

  • Reworked combat to flow better and be easier to keep track of, and made the game a little more deadly. There will for example, be fewer ways to deflect critical hits, so combat feels more dangerous.
  • Talents now apply to specific areas and do that one thing well, avoiding the problem of overlapping bonuses.
  • Resilience & Resolve have merged into Fate & Fortune to reduce tracking these resources separately.
  • The magic system will be revised, with elements from recent Winds of Magic supplement baked into the core rules.

In a separate interview with Wargrammer, McDowall also confirmed that designers have been working to “look through everything and standardize it a bit more”, and strip out peripheral subsystems “where the additional complexity doesn’t really give the returns in terms of satisfaction of the experience”.

McDowall also confirmed that the timeline of the WFRP 5e will remain close to the current events from fourth edition, just before the cataclysmic End Times.

When will Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition be released?

An official release date has not yet been announced, but Cubicle 7 has confirmed that the new WFRP 5e rules will be available sometime in late 2026. We’ll update this page with an exact date once it’s been confirmed.

What other products are coming for Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay Fifth Edition?

In addition to a new WFRP 5e core rule book, Cubicle 7 has confirmed that a new “mega campaign” is in the works, along with a range of new accessories that will be available at launch, including cards, dice, and maps, alongside new adventures set in familiar Warhammer locales such as Wrecker’s Point, Marienburg and even a Dark Elf Black Ark.

Final Thoughts

As Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay approaches its 40th anniversary and the fourth edition of the game begins to show its age, it’s not too surprising that a new edition is in the works. Whether this new system will live up to fan expectations, however, remains to be seen.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
