The war for the Orion Arm is about to enter a whole new phase, with Massif Press and Dark Horse Books officially announcing two official releases for the Lancer TTRPG. The upcoming books will include a series of narrative modules entitled Operation Fulcrum Dawn and a lore drop in the form of the Lancer Setting Guide Volume 1.

It’s worth noting, however, that these books aren’t entirely new, but are rather collections of existing Lancer materials which were previously available only as PDFs. Both expansions will be available in hardcover in March 2027, but you can pre-order them now from your local game store, Dark Horse and Amazon.

Below, we boot up our chassis, lock in our tactical systems and break down all the details.

What is the Lancer TTRPG?

Lancer is a sci-fi tabletop RPG that blends rules-light narrative play with turn-based, tactical mech combat. The game is set 15,000 years in the future, with humanity having developed faster-than-light technology and colonized thousands of planets. Much of the game’s lore, however, is focused on the Orion Arm, a sprawling area of the galaxy now largely under the control of a utopian central government known as The Union. Players take on the role of elite pilots called “Lancers,” who operate high-tech mechs and battle oppressive tyrants, military dictatorships and mega-corporations operating on the frontiers of space outside the rule of the Union.

The lore is incredibly dense and perhaps best known for its surprisingly optimistic view of the future, while also exploring unique themes such as benevolent AI, transhumanism, post-scarcity futurism and the friction between utopian ideals and the gritty reality of frontier survival. In this sense, it’s both similar to other mech franchises like BattleTech and Robotech, while also carving out its own niche within the space.

Mechanically, Lancer is known for its “mud-and-lasers” approach, which alternates between a relatively loose narrative-style of roleplaying and crunchy, grid-based tactical combat. Outside of the cockpit, the game uses a streamlined d20-plus-bonuses system to handle narrative downtime and pilot actions. Once the mechs are deployed, however, the game uses a somewhat complex skirmish system similar to miniatures games like BattleTech. Players build their machines using a License Level (LL) system, mixing and matching parts from various manufacturers to create hyper-specialized builds with unique roles like Striker, Controller or Support.

Lancer was created by Miguel Lopez (a former Worldbuilding Desiger at Wizards of the Coast and now a narrative designer at video game studio Bungie) and artist Tom Parkinson-Morgan (also known online as Abbadon, the creator of the popular Kill Six Billion Demons webcomic). The game initially made waves with a successful Kickstarter in 2019 and was published under the imprint of Massif Press. In 2024, a second printing (also known as Lancer V2) was released by Dark Horse Comics which featured new cover artwork and some minor rules corrections. Since then, the line has expanded with several official supplements, featuring setting info and adventures (known as “modules”). Over the past few years, however, there have been no other official releases from Massif Press or Dark Horse, with third-party publishers filling in the gap with recent titles such as Lancer: Pass the Torch.

What is Operation Fulcrum Dawn about?

Operation Fulcrum Dawn is a 120-page collection (in an 8.5″ x 11″ format) written and designed by Kai Tave, along with Lancer creators Miguel Lopez and Tom Parkinson-Morgan. The book collects two interconnected introductory narrative modules together in physical print for the first time: Operation Solstice Rain (originally published in 2023) and Operation Winter Scar (originally published in 2024), which collectively take pilots from LL0 all the way to LL4.

  • Operation Solstice Rain (LL0–LL2): Rookie Union pilots are deployed into the city of Nov Elysia on a high-stakes rescue operation amidst a sudden outbreak of urban warfare between the Leandric States Alliance and the Vestan Sovereignty.
  • Operation Winter Scar (LL2–LL4): Pits seasoned pilots directly against the full force of the Vestan Sovereignty Armed Forces, ranging from main battle tanks to advanced combat chassis.
  • Tactical Resources: Includes twelve complete combat encounters, each paired with dedicated, fully illustrated tactical battle maps, GM advice and player options such as new mechs, talents and equipment.

What is the Lancer Setting Guide Volume 1 about?

LANCER: Setting Guide Volume 1 is a 224-page hardcover (in an 8.5″ x 11″ format) by Miguel Lopez and Tom Bloom that collects two previously published digital supplements: The Long Rim (which was released in 2020) and The Karrakin Trade Baronies (first published in 2022). The book provides GMs and players with worldbuilding, mechanical options and sandbox generation tools across two distinct galactic regions:

  • The Karrakin Trade Baronies: Explores the oldest aristocratic civilization in Union space, covering the Baronies’ traditions and neo-feudal power struggles as they face economic stagnation and a rising tide of Republican revolution.
  • The Long Rim: A deep dive into the lawless, unregulated frontier of Union space. The content details cutthroat corporate Enterprises, pirate syndicates, uncanny HORUS cells and the clandestine Horizon Collective.
  • Mechanical Extras: Features supplemental tables for generating custom maps and NPCs, alternative playstyle systems and an expanded roster of pilotable mechs, frames and manufacturer licenses.

How much are the new Lancer books?

Operation Fulcrum Dawn and the Lancer Setting Guide Volume 1 will retail for $29.99 USD each in hardcover format (not including shipping and handling). That’s a pretty solid price point given that the original PDFs of the source material range in price from $9.99 to $18 USD (although if you did want to get them all in PDF format, you can pick up the Lancer Bundle from Massif Press, which includes the core rules and eight official supplements for $112 USD).

When are the new Lancer books coming out?

Operation Fulcrum Dawn will be released on March 16, 2027, while Lancer Setting Guide Volume 1 will be hitting shelves a little later on March 30, 2027.

Final Thoughts

Despite having only a few books to its name, Lancer has become one of the most popular indie TTRPGs of the past few years, so it’s not surprising that we’re now seeing a wider push from a larger publisher like Dark Horse. This is also likely the first of several upcoming hardcover releases, given that there are additional official Lancer PDF-only products which can be adapted into print.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on these new books in the days ahead. In the meantime, you can pre-order them now from your local game store, Dark Horse and Amazon.
