Players looking to get their first taste of Starfinder Second Edition will soon be able to find an even easier way to experience the Pact Worlds for the first time, with Paizo recently unveiling the new Starfinder Beginner Box: Treasures of the Tomb Ship. As with previous starter sets, the box will contain everything needed to run a SF2E game for the first time, including a streamlined set of rules, pre-generated characters, alien and NPC tokens, dice and a complete adventure.
The new set will be officially coming out in May 2027, and pre-orders will open soon on the Paizo website and Amazon. Below, we take a closer look at what to expect when this new introductory adventure arrives.
What’s included in the new Starfinder 2E Beginner Box?
The Treasures of the Tomb Ship box set includes the following:
- A 72-page Hero’s Handbook, including rules for character creation, along with a list of basic spells and equipment.
- An 88-page Game Master’s Guide, containing an introductory adventure, 20 pages of alien monster stats, magic items and GM advice on creating your own adventures.
- Four premade characters, plus four blank character sheets if you want to generate your own PC.
- Four player reference cards, listing the basic rules.
- 100+ cardbord NPCs and alien monster pawns.
- 1 full-color double-sided adventure map.
- A complete set of polyhedral dice (d20, d12, d10, d8, d6 and d4).
Notably the material is co-written by longtime Paizo contributor Jenny Jarzabski and Mike Kimmel (who co-created the Starfinder Second Edition rules).
How much is the new Starfinder Beginner Box?
Treasures of the Tomb Ship will retail for $49.99 USD (not including shipping and handling). It’s possible a PDF version will also be available through both Paizo and DriveThruRPG, although this has not yet been confirmed. Notably, this is bit pricier than past Pathfinder or Starfinder beginner boxes, but speaks to ongoing tariffs and increased production costs.
When will the new Starfinder Beginner Box be released?
Treasures of the Tomb Ship will officially be released on May 5th, 2027 at which time it should be widely available at local game stores and most major online and physical retailers.
What other Starfinder Beginner Boxes are available?
This will actually be the second introductory box set to come out in as many years following the Murder in Metal City set which was released in July 2025 to coincide with the launch of the new Starfinder Second Edition core rules. Technically, that particular product was not a starter set, but rather part of Paizo’s “Game Night” line which is designed to get new players and GMs up and running with minimal prep. The approach and target audience, however, is similar.
Prior to that the last official Starfinder Beginner Box to come out was in April 2019 for SF1E rules.
Final thoughts
It’s great to see Paizo continuing to release new beginner boxes (they recently did the same with the excellent Secrets of the Unlit Star set for Pathfinder 2E). Whether this new set is able to hit that same high bar, however, remains to be seen.
