Running the Call of Cthulhu tabletop RPG is about to get a little easier, with Chaosium recently unveiling new details about the upcoming Call of Cthulhu: Keeper Companion. The upcoming sourcebook is packed with new rules options and advice, in addition to including three brand-new scenarios that are designed to showcase how the new optional mechanics work.

The book will be hitting shelves in October 2026, but you can pre-order it now in hardcover and PDF from your local game store, Chaosium, DriveThruRPG and Amazon.

Below, we take a closer look at what to expect when the book arrives this fall.

What is the Call of Cthulhu: Keeper Companion about?

The Keeper Companion is a new optional rules supplement for Call of Cthulhu 7th edition written by Chaosium Creative Director Mike Mason and veteran designer Paul Fricker (both of whom were instrumental in building out the CoC 7E system). The book is designed to expand on the existing advice and toolkit provided in the Keeper Rulebook which was published back in 2016. The new Companion includes:

• New Investigator creation methods: Fresh ways to roll up and conceptualize characters before they end up dead.
• Investigator organizations: New systems for building investigator organizations, secret societies and paranormal government agencies.
• Streamlined optional rules: New mechanics designed to speed up skill rolls, tactical combat and high-stakes chases.
• Revised sanity rules: A new version of the game’s iconic mental fragility mechanics.
• Advice for online play: Modern guidance and options for running games online using VTTs.
• Keeper advice: New tips on scenario design and suggestions for creating memorable NPCs and encounters.
• Updated character sheets: Revised investigator sheets, pulp hero sheets and new physical/digital play aids.

What are the scenarios like in the Keeper Companion?

In addition to its new rules options and Keeper advice, the book includes three brand-new scenarios, each of which designed to showcase the new mechanics presented in the Companion. These includes:

• Little Miracles: A beginner-friendly scenario set near Arkham, revolving around a missing professor from Miskatonic University.
• If I Had a Hammer: A chilling narrative that proves how quickly a comfortable Friday night at home can turn into an absolute nightmare.
• What a Puzzler!: A clever investigative scenario centered around the era’s new, highly addictive fad for jigsaw puzzles.

How much is the Call of Cthulhu: Keeper Companion?

The hardcover retails for $54.99 USD (not including shipping, handling and taxes). A price has not yet been confirmed for the PDF, but it will likely be $29.99 USD and sold via DriveThruRPG.

When will the Call of Cthulhu: Keeper Companion be released?

The book is officially scheduled for release on October 28th, 2026, at which point you’ll be able to pick it up directly from the Chaosium website, local game stores and online retailers.

Final Thoughts

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a Keeper Companion, with Chaosium releasing a similar book back in 2008 for Call of Cthulhu 6th Edition. With CoC 7th edition, now over a decade old, however, providing Keepers with more modern advice and some new mechanical options feels like a smart move.
