What is the Blade Runner RPG?

The Blade Runner RPG is an officially licensed game from Free League based on the popular Blade Runner films and related media tie-ins. The primary setting is the dystopia future of Los Angeles in the year 2037, in the time between the first Blade Runner and the Blade Runner 2049 films, a period in the setting’s lore following the 2022 blackout and the introduction of the infamous Nexus-9 replicants.

The game leans heavily into what it describes as a “neon-noir” style of play, with with players taking on the role of human or replicant law enforcement officers navigating a world of corruption, social collapse and corporate greed. Adventures are framed as Case Files, emphasizing clues, interviews and slow burn revelations rather than combat encounters. It’s also designed to emulate the gritty proto-cyberpunk tone of the films and explore larger philosophical themes around justice, morality and what it truly means to be human.

Mechanically, the game uses a modified version of Free League’s Year Zero Engine, with players using dice pools (consisting of d6, d8, d10 or d12) based on attributes and skills. It also includes a stress and empathy system, allowing characters to “push” re-rolls but potentially suffer lasting emotional strain that impacts gameplay. Additional rules are built around memories, and the game includes a time-track system for investigator shifts (morning, day and night).

Notably, the game was first published in 2023 after a successful Kickstarter generated almost $1.9 million USD in funding, with the project hitting its initial funding target in just 3 minutes. Following launch, Free League also released a Starter Set along with the standard Core Rule book (with both earning Gold ENNIES for Best Cartography and Best Layout & Design). More recently, Free League launched another 2025 Kickstarter for the Replicant Rebellion expansion, which will likely be available to the general public in late 2026.

Is the new Blade Runner RPG box set worth picking up?

If you’re a existing fan of the game, there are a few reasons why it might be worth snagging.

  • An immersion boost: Physical player handouts like newspaper pages, surveillance photos and mug shots reinforce the game’s gritty dystopian vibes in a way PDFs simply can’t.
  • New solo support: The inclusion of these new rules offer a great way to get even more out of the game (here’s hoping Free League will also release them separately in the near future).
  • Maps and standees: While there’s no shortage of fantasy maps to use at the table and on VTTs, there’s not nearly as many options for cyberpunk games like Blade Runner, so the inclusion of new maps feels like a major win.

Final thoughts

If you’re a new or existing player of Free League’s Blade Runner RPG, this new box set looks like a solid addition. And while it’s definitely not a core product that you absolutely need to pick up in order to enjoy the game, it also looks like it’ll go a long way to making the gritty streets of 2037 Los Angeles feel alive… like tears in the rain.
