If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like if Superman battled Cthulhu, then Doom Guard: The RPG is definitely going to be right up your alley. Created by Pinnacle Entertainment for use with the Savage Worlds RPG system, the book pits superheroes against twisted cults, eldritch gods and sanity-shattering existential threats. The hardcover will be coming out later this year, but the PDF is available now from DriveThruRPG.
Doom Guard is also part of the larger Necessary Evil campaign setting for Savage Worlds, which is essentially a dark superhero universe in which the world’s mightiest defenders were wiped out by invading aliens, with players taking on the role of the surviving supervillains. The new book also owes its existence to Doom Guard: The Supers vs. Cthulhu Board Game, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter in August 2025 and included the RPG tie-in as a stretch goal.
So it this RPG blend of tights and terror worth picking up? Below, we go up, up and away with all the horrifying details.

What is the Doom Guard RPG?
Doom Guard: The RPG is a 96-page campaign sourcebook for Savage Worlds Adventure Edition and includes:
- A detailed guide to Liberty City (which is the core setting for Necessary Evil)
- New Hindrances, Edges, gear and super powers that integrate with Savage Worlds
- New Corruption rules that offer powers at a dark cost
- A full 10-act Plot Point Campaign focused on eldritch powers and a globe-spanning conspiracy
- New monsters, supervillains and NPCs, with tie ints to the Cthulhu mythos
- Gamemaster guidelines for combining the book with Necessary Evil and Cosmic Crisis

It is worth noting, however, that you do need a copy of Savage Worlds core rules and Super Powers Companion to use the book, so it’s not a complete standalone product, although you don’t need any other Necessary Evil materials to be able to use it.
It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Doom Guard in RPG format, with Pinnacle Entertainment previously releasing a tie-in product entitled Tales of the Doom Guard, which featured five adventures inspired by the Cthulhu mythos as part of the Necessary Evil line-up.

How much is the Doom Guard RPG?
Currently, the Doom Guard: The RPG is currently available only as a PDF on DriveThruRPG for $19.99 USD. A hardcover version and PDF was released to backers of the Doom Guard: The Supers vs. Cthulhu Board Game Kickstarter, but it’s not clear if this physical copy will also be available to the general public.
When was the Doom Guard RPG released?
A PDF version of The Doom Guard RPG was released on DriveThruRPG on December 14th, 2025. Pinnacle hasn’t confirmed when the hardcover version will be released, but it will likely be late 2026.

Why is the Doom Guard RPG worth picking up
- A unique TTRPG concept: The concept of superheroes versus the Cthulhu mythos is genuinely cool, and something we really haven’t seen before in TTRPGs or comic books.
- Part of a larger shared universe: Doom Guard connects directly to both the Necessary Evil RPG line and the Doom Guard board game, making it easy to move between formats or pull inspiration from each.
- Savage Worlds accessibility: If you’re already a fan of Savage Worlds, the book offers a great way to expand existing materials.
- Solid production and price: Pinnacle has a proven track record when it comes to their books, so the art, writing and design is solid, with the whole product relatively cheap considering the amount of content included.

Final Thoughts
Doom Guard: The RPG is an ambitious expansion of the Savage Worlds Necessary Evil universe, blending superhero action with Lovecraftian dread in a way we’ve never really seen before and it’s great to see Pinnacle Entertainment legitimately taking risks like this. If you’ve ever wondered what might happen if the Avengers took on Old Ones, Doom Guard just might give you the answer.
The hardcover version of the book will be coming out later this year, but in the meantime the PDF is available now from DriveThruRPG.
