Steve Jackson Games has recently confirmed that a revised version of GURPS Fourth Edition is in the works. The news was quietly announced at Gamehole Con 2025 and later followed up on in a thread on the SJG forums, which quoted a recent discussion with GURPS Line Editor Sean “Kromm” Punch.
The news is a bit surprising to many fans who were expecting a completely new edition, given that GURPS fourth edition is over 20-years old, having first been published in 2004. Yet according to Punch the update will maintain the current rules set and instead focus primarily on asthetics and usability. Below, we take a look at everything we know so far.

What is GURPS?
GURPS (Generic Universal RolePlaying System) was first published by Steve Jackson Games in 1986, and over the years has became one of the most well known and flexible tabletop RPGs ever made. Designed to handle any genre, time period or type of paly, the game offers a single unified framework for everything from hard science fiction and superhero adventures to fantasy epics and historical simulations. Over the decades, GURPS has spawned hundreds of supplements and sourcebooks (many now considered classics) including GURPS Space, GURPS Cyberpunk, GURPS Horror and GURPS Traveller.

The current GURPS Fourth Edition was released in 2004 and introduced a number of significant changes, including a streamlined yet detailed ruleset built around 3d6 roll-under mechanics. Players build characters using point-based creation, spending points on attributes, skills, advantages, and disadvantages to customize nearly any concept imaginable. Combat emphasizes realism and tactical depth, while the modular design allows groups to choose how “crunchy” or simplified their campaigns should be.

What’s changing in GURPS 4th Edition Revised?
According to the forum posts on the Steve Jackson Games forum, the revised GURPS 4e materials will include:
- Improved visuals and layouts to make the book easier to read and use at the table. This will include new artwork, quotes and text placement.
- “Best of” rules additions that have been embraced by the community over the past twenty years. These rules changes, however, will be clearly marked and included in a roughly 25-page addendum to make it easier for existing 4e players to reference.
- Minor content updates for clarity will be include to clean up typos and rules errors (for example, instances where “injury” is accidentally referred to as “damage”).
- Page reference consistency will remain the same, meaning that users will be able to find the exact same rules on the exact same page of all GURPS 4e core materials.

In the post, Punch also writes that “I can say without shilling or exaggerating that it is far, far more than a new printing. It just isn’t a full edition. There are things between the two. A revision is one of those things. If all a reader cares about is the rules . . . well, there will be lots of addenda, but no, not a full revision. However, lots of readers care about readability, sensitivity, design aesthetics, being aware that it’s 21 years later, etc. even if not a single rule changes.”
In other words, the primary focus will be on giving a much needed visual polish to a book that’s definitely begun to show its age.

When will GURPS 4th Edition Revised be released?
The exact release date of the revised GURPS 4e content has not yet been confirmed. When asked about how many years away the product is, however, Punch notes: “Zero. It won’t be years. Most of the work is already done.“
This suggests that we’ll likely see a revised GURPS 4e starter set sometime in 2026 (we’ll update this page with an exact date as soon it’s been confirmed).

Final Thoughts
It’s been over 20 years since GURPS 4th edition launched, and during that time period both the game and the community have changed significantly. At the same time, the ruleset has remained stable and actively embraced by the fanbase. As such, a revised GURPS 4e feels like a much needed step to bridge the gap between old and new. Whether or not that bridge is one fans are willing to cross, however, remains to be seen.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s available. In the meantime, you can learn more about GURPS on the Steve Jackson Games website.
