Loot Tavern Sets Sail with New “VoidSea” 5e Expansion

Third-party RPG publisher Loot Tavern (best known for their 5e supplement Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting) has recently launched a new Kickstarter in partnership with miniature makers Archvillain Games and Titan Forge.

The new book is entitled VoidSea and is billed as a “Grimdark-Salted, Eldritch-Infested, High-Seas-Soaked expansion for 5e.” It’s essentially the Cthulhu mythos meets pirates with a dash of mutants and kaiju thrown into the mix. The book includes new species, new magic items, new monsters and new rules for naval combat. Backers can also get access to a series of accompanying adventures and a range of high-end miniatures in both physical format and as STL files.

As of this writing the project was funded just a few minutes after it was launched and you back it now on Kickstarter. Below, we a set a course for horror on the high seas and dig into all the 5e booty.

What is Voidsea?

VoidSea is a new third-party expansion for the Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition rules (covering both the 2014 and 2024 variants). The setting is a brutal drowned world where eldritch titans roam the depths, undead crews man cursed vessels and magical technology lurks in ancient ruins.

The projects consists of two books: The first book is simply called VoidSea and is 350+ page sourcebook that includes 15 new species, 7 new subclasses, 40 new monster stat blocks and new rules for naval combat. It also contains new rules for a “Mutant Mayhem” system where you can tap into new powers that alter your physical appearance. Notably, the book also integrates with Loot Tavern’s previous 5e release Heliana’s Guide to Monster Hunting, letting your harvest monster parts in order to craft over 80 new magic items developed specifically for VoidSea.

The project also includes a second book entitled Salt, Storm & Steel, which consists of 8 adventures (divided into four “Adventure Bundles”), which cover a variety of character levels and a range of combat, exploration and narrative play.

Backers can also get access to over 100 new miniatures, including a new 18″ Mimic Ship that can be used the home base for players and further customized in-game by looting and crafting components found in the accompanying adventures.

Final Thoughts

Over the years Loot Tavern has released some absolutely amazing 5e products and VoidSea looks to continue that tradition. In fact, as of this writing, the project has already generated over $300,000 USD in funding in just the first day, suggesting it will likely be a major TTRPG release.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this product in the days ahead, but in the meantime, if you’re interested in picking it up you can back it now on Kickstarter.
