The Wildsea RPG Hits the Airwaves With Brand New Adventure

The Wildsea is calling once again, with the award-winning tabletop RPG launching a brand new adventure entitled Tigers on the Wire, which is crowdfunding now on Gamefound.

The adventure marks a return for the unique eco-apocalyptic fantasy RPG, in which players crew chainsaw-driven ships across the canopy of a planet-sized forest, exploring ancient ruins, salvaging artifacts and encountering bizarre creatures. It also marks the third official adventure for The Wildsea, showing just how quickly the game has spread its roots into the TTRPG community.

So is Tigers on the Wire worth stringing your rigging for? Below, we cut into all the details.

What Is The Wildsea RPG?

The Wildsea is set in a post-apocalyptic world where centuries ago a wave of rampant plant growth known as the Verdancy ravaged the planet. Now, the ground has been swallowed by giant trees which form a vast green canopy known as the Wildsea. Here, chainsaw-powered ships cut through the treetops while scavengers, outlaws and explorers (known as wildsailors) hunt for relics, forge new alliances and carve fleeting empires amid the overgrowth. It’s a setting teeming with bizarre creatures, including lumbering plantfolk, humanoid moths, bat creatures, sentient fungus and the scattered remnants of humanity.

The award-winning TTRPG was created by Felix Isaacs and first published by Mythworks (formerly Mythopoeia) in 2022 after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Since then there have been a number of other supplements, including the expansions Storm & Root and Ship Gardens, as well as the two adventures (known as “scenarios”) Red Right Hand and One-Armed Scissor.

Mechanically, The Wildsea uses a dice-pool system built around six-sided dice. When a character attempts a risky action, they roll a pool of d6s based on their relevant Edge (attribute), skill and situational advantages. The highest die determines the outcome, with a 6 being a success, 4–5 a mixed success with complications, and 1–3 being a complete failure. At the same a matching dice trigger a “Twist,” representing an unexpected narrative turn. Progress toward long-term goals like repairing a ship or charting new routes is monitored using tracks (similar to clocks), and characters advance by achieving Drives and Milestones that reflect personal growth and story development.

What is “The Wildsea: Tigers on the Wire” adventure about?

Tigers on the Wire is a 48-page scenario written by The Wildsea creator Felix Isaacs. The adventure focuses on a remote radio broadcast that hints at a long lost secret. Players must attempt to find the source of the broadcast while also dealing with the Queen of Claws, a pirate legend who is desperate to find it for herself.

In addition to the narrative content making up the scenario, the book also includes:

  • New hazards, including pirates, spectres and bat-folk
  • New locales including a new safe haven known as Pomingko Lagoon and the shattered hunting grounds of Spireklin
  • New NPCs and foes: Which can potentially be used in other scenarios
  • New character options: The book includes a new Post (the game’s equivalent of a class) known as the Broadcaster, a maestro of whispers and music who can tap into remote signals.

Why is “The Wildsea: Tigers on the Wire” worth backing?

  • Supporting a unique game: The Wildsea may be one of the most original TTRPGs ever made and its definitely worth supporting.
  • Expanded lore: If you’re already a fan, this offers a peak into another part of this unique setting
  • More adventure material: With only two previously published scenarios, the game desperately needs more official adventure content for use as one-shots or as part of an ongoing campaign.
  • High production value: Mythworks previous books in The Wildsea line are absolutely beautiful in terms of the layout and design, and this book is likely going to look just as good.
