What Is the Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide 2?

Player’s Guide 2 is a 256-page hardcover sourcebook with new character options for both Tales of the Valiant and standard 5E. It is an expansion of the original Player’s Guide, which was released in the summer of 2024 as one of the three core books (along with the Game Master’s Guide and Monster Vault) that collectively make up the Tales of the Valiant system. Player’s Guide 2 includes:

  • Theurge: A dual-caster that can tap into two magical traditions.
  • Witch: A Wyrd class Wisdom-dependent spellcaster infused with occult power.
  • Vanguard: A battlefield commander who excels at leadership and frontline control.

  • 48 new subclasses for both the 12 existing ToV classes, plus the three new base classes.
  • 9 new lineages, including the Dhampir, Elemental Scion, Goblin, Halamantao, Sapopova, Shade and Tosculi.
  • 11 new heritages, including the Conflicted, Covenant, Extraplanar, Feysworn, Hivebound, Ironwrought, Islander, Joymonger, Kithren, Oceanic and Splinter.
  • 8 new backgrounds, including the Alchemist, Chronicler, Gravedigger, Hedge Mage, Investigator, Rebel, Servant and Smuggler.
  • New talents under the three base Magical, Martial and Technical categories.
  • 170 new spells, including 120 base spells and 50 rituals.
  • 100+ new magic items, including 6 new Fabled magic items.

This new system lets characters acquire, customize and expand a home base. Similar to the D&D 2024 Bastion System, players are able to invest gold and downtime to add new facilities like libraries, forges or training yards. They can also hire workers to maintain the base and enhance downtime activities. As the headquarters evolves, hidden mysteries (such as secret cellars, magical spring or forgotten ruins) can also appear which offer additional adventure hooks.

The book includes several new rulesets, including:

  • Training and riding mounts
  • Running a criminal enterprise
  • Casting options using spell points
  • Epic play rules for Level 20

How much is Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide 2?

The hardcover retails for $49.99 USD (not including shipping and handling), while the PDF version is $29.99 USD. Notably, you can also purchase a Hardcover + PDF bundle that is selling for $59.99 USD via the Kobold Press website.

How will Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide 2 be released?

The book is currently slated for release in February 2026, although pre-orders are live now. Notably, in May 2025 a preview PDF was also released which you can still pick up for free on DriveThruRPG.

Is the Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide 2 Worth picking up?

If you’re on the fence about the book, here are a few points worth considering:

  • A huge selection of new 5E character options: With Wizards of the Coast releasing new D&D 2024 subclasses at a glacial pace (and no new base classes at all) Player’s Guide 2 fills a huge gap in the modern 5E ecosystem.
  • New systems that expand play: Rules for training mounts, running criminal enterprises and using spell points have the potential to add lot more utility to 5E play.
  • A better form of Bastions: Unlike the D&D 2024 Bastion system (which introduces yet another abstract meta currency to track) the new base building rules seem smarter and easier to manage,.
  • Solid value for the price: Given the sheer volume of material inside, the price is reasonable (WotC’s latest supplements cost a lot more while delivering far less).
  • A major step forward for the Tales of the Valiant ecosystem: ToV is a little over a year old, but products like Player Guide 2 are an important next step in terms of evolving the system and offering more options and support for the growing fanbase.

Final Thoughts

Tales of the Valiant Player’s Guide 2 looks like a natural next step for players who want more depth, more customization and more narrative control over their campaigns. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the book in the days ahead and will offer a complete review closer to launch.

In the meantime, you can preorder Player’s Guide 2 now in hardcover and PDF via Kobold Press and DriveThruRPG.
