New Pathfinder 2E Beginner Box: Secrets of the Unlit Star (First Look)

Players looking to get their first taste of Pathfinder will soon have a new way to experience the game, with Paizo recently unveiling more details for their upcoming Pathfinder Beginner Box:Secrets of the Unlit Star. The new box set will be released in the spring of 2026, but is available for pre-order now from the Paizo website.

Designed for Pathfinder Second Edition, it also marks the first beginner box in several years, following the release of the Troubles in Otari remastered set. This refresh is designed to modernize the introductory PF2E gameplay experience with new classes, a new adventure structure and even a solo play mode, all while keeping the step-by-step teaching approach that made the original so successful. Below, we take a closer look at all the details.

What’s included in the new Pathfinder 2E Beginner Box?

Like previous PF2E beginner boxes, Secrets of the Unlit Star is designed to be a complete introduction to Pathfinder Second Edition, offering everything new players need to get started. It includes:

  • 72-page Hero’s Handbook: Featuring character creation rules, a solo choose-your-own-adventure scenario, skills, spells and equipment.
  • 88-page Game Master’s Guide: Containing a full introductory adventure (Secrets of the Unlit Star), along with over 20 pages of monsters, magic items and guidance on how to run the game.
  • Four premade characters: The Barbarian, Bard, Monk and Sorcerer. This is a fairly significant a departure over the more traditional Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, Rogue options which have been featured in past beginner boxes.
  • New ancestries: The box set includes the standard human, dwarf and elf ancestry options from the previous beginner box, but also introduces the orc and halfling options.

  • Four blank character sheets: These can be used if players want to add additional characters or make their own after completing the primary adventure.
  • 100+ cardboard character and monster pawns: Notably, this includes several new monsters that haven’t previously appeared in PF2E, including the Shadow Bat.
  • A full-color, double-sided adventure map: This includes details on the village of Grayce and a new region that hasn’t been prominently featured in past PF2E adventures.
  • Four player reference cards: These are designed to allow players to quickly find basic rules and get a general sense of the game’s mechanics.
  • A complete polyhedral dice set: This includes the standard d20, d12, d10, d8, d6 and d4 of past sets.

Notably, Secrets of the Unlit Star is also compatible with the previous Beginner Box, so you can potentially mix and match classes and character options.

The box also introduces a new adventure set in the town of Grayce, which is located in the haunted, mist-shrouded nation of Ustalav. Player soon discover a sunken temple dedicated to Desna, the ancient goddess of freedom and luck. They must then locate a mysterious artifact known as the Unlit Star, which is broken into pieces scattered throughout the temple. Players can, however, decide which pieces to go after in which order, making it a bit more sandboxy than previous sets.

The adventure will also include more social encounters than we’ve seen in previous beginner boxes, including introducing a variety of NPCs, such as a Leshy potion shop owner named Gorky. Like past PF2E beginner box sets, Secrets of the Unlit Star is also designed to dovetail into future modules, specifically an upcoming adventure entitled Troubles in Grayce, which will also be released in 2026.

When will the new Pathfinder Beginner Box come out?

The Secrets of the Unlit Star box set is scheduled for release on May 6th, 2026, at which time it will be available from the Paizo website as well as local game stores.

How much is the new Pathfinder Beginner Box?

The new Pathfinder Beginner Box retails for $49.99 USD (not including shipping and handling). This is a bit of bump over the previous beginner box which retailed for $45.99 USD (although isn’t surprising given rising productions costs).

Why is the new Pathfinder Beginner Box worth picking up?

There are definitely a few reasons why Secrets of the Unlit Star is worth grabbing.

  • A solid introduction to Pathfinder 2E: The Beginner Box remains one of the clearest, most approachable ways to learn PF2E, teaching rules and mechanics gradually through play rather than dense rule reading.
  • Backwards compatibility with past sets: Everything in Secrets of the Unlit Star is fully compatible with the previous Pathfinder Beginner Box, allowing groups to mix and match classes, characters and monsters across both products.
  • New classes and ancestries: This version moves beyond the classic Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue, introducing the Barbarian, Bard, Monk and Sorcerer, while expanding ancestries to include orcs and halflings alongside humans, elves and dwarves.
  • Opens the door to future adventures: The setting and story hooks are designed to transition smoothly into upcoming Pathfinder adventures, including Trouble in Grayce, making this feel like the first step of a longer campaign.
  • A great price point: While slightly more expensive than the previous Beginner Box, the $49.99 price still offers strong value given the amount of content, components and replayability included.
  • New styles of play: The box also introduces a new solo learning adventure for individual players, more social encounters, and a more open, sandbox-style dungeon crawl that gives groups greater freedom than the original Beginner Box.

Final thoughts

The Pathfinder Beginner Box has been an important introductory product for years, so it’s not surprising that Paizo is investing heavily in this new version. The update, however, feels like more than just a minor cosmetic refresh, offering new styles of play, new classes and opening the door for further adventures.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this story in the days ahead and will do a complete deep dive and review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order Secrets of the Unlit Star now from your local game store or the Paizo website.

Below is also a video from the official Paizo YouTube channel interviewing Pathfinder Rules & Lore Creative Director Luis Loza, which offers more details on what to expect (for ease of reference, we’ve timestamped it to the relevant section).
