BackerKit Inks Deal With DriveThruRPG to Deliver TTRPG Content

Crowdfunding platform BackerKit has recently announced that it’s partnering with online gaming marketplace DriveThruRPG to help deliver digital content for future TTRPG campaigns.

Notably, many publishers have already been using DriveThruRPG to manage BackerKit pledge materials, but until now this has been an entirely manual process. The new integration will significantly streamline the process. For backers, this potentially means no longer having to wait until the campaign ends to get digital rewards. For creators, it means potentially getting more users to follow and support projects through digital incentives.

Below, we take a closer look at what this means for the future of BackerKit TTRPG crowdfunders.

How will DriveThruRPG integrate with BackerKit?

In a post on the official BackerKit blog, they note that the integration will automatically send digital rewards to backers the moment they pledge, reserve or even follow a campaign.

For BackerKit campaign creators, the set up involves accessing an API key through the backend of DriveThruRPG to connect the two platforms (which is relatively easy an involves copying and pasting a code). Once it’s set up, campaign managers will then be able to customize what specific digital content they want to share with backers.

For backers, there’s no additional setup required, other than signing into DriveThruRPG to get your reward. The system can also send you notifications on when digital content is available as the BackerKit campaign progresses, essentially offering another way for creators to communicate to supporters.

Final thoughts

At first glance, the partnership between BackerKit and DriveThruRPG seems like a win for both the two companies as well as TTRPG campaign creators and backers. In fact, BackerKit has continued to expand their support of the tabletop gaming space with a number of new tools, even as rival Kickstarter has faced backlash over some of their more restrictive content policies.

At the same time, this new integration also expands the digital presence of DriveThruRPG, which is close to becoming a monopoly when it comes to digital TTRPG distribution. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this partnership in the days ahead and will update this page with more information as it’s made available.
