Facehugging fans of Free League Publishing’s Alien RPG are about to get another round of chest-bursting, acid-spewing xenomorphic action courtesy of Operation Leading Edge, an upcoming expansion for the award-winning game.
The box set is a sequel to the previously released Rapture Protocol and offers a more cinematic style of gameplay, with a short narrative, pre-generated characters and lower rate of survivability than the standard campaign format. The expansion will be coming out towards the end of 2026, but you can pre-order the PDF from DriveThruRPG and physical copies from your local game store, Free League, and Amazon.
Below, we slap a fresh mag in our pulse rifles and fire up all the details.

What is the Alien RPG from Free League?
ALIEN: The Roleplaying Game is a tabletop adaptation of the popular Alien franchise from 20th Century Fox, which has appeared in films, comic books, video games and a recent FX TV show. The TTRPG blends survival horror with action and sci-fi, with players taking on the roles of space marines, colonists, scientists and corporate agents facing down the extraterrestrial killing machines known as Xenomorphs.
In terms of lore, the game takes place three years after the events from the Aliens film, following the destruction of the USS Sulaco and the colony of Hadley’s Hope on the planet LV-426. It’s a period in which the xenomorph threat has become more prevalent, even as an interstellar cold war is underway between the dominant systems of the United Americas and the upstart Union of Progressive Peoples.

Mechanically, the game runs on Free League’s Year Zero Engine, which is known for its relatively rules-light approach and emphasis on player choice. The game uses a dice pool system, with players rolling a number of six-sided dice based on their skill and attribute levels (with a roll of 6 indicating success). The Alien RPG also includes a built-in stress and panic system, giving characters temporary advantages but increasing the risk of losing control when it matters most.
The game also supports two modes of play that change how you interact with the setting and rules: Cinematic Play is designed to emulate the survival horror style of the films and is fast, short and extremely deadly, with players taking on pre-generated characters with their own unique motivations. Conversely, Campaign Play is designed for a more traditional long-term TTRPG format, with players more likely to survive over the course of multiple sessions.
Originally published in 2019, the Alien RPG quickly became a surprise hit among the TTRPG community, winning Gold for Best Game at the 2020 ENNIE Awards and earning critical praise and a growing fan base. In the past few years, the game has expanded with new official supplements from Free League, including Destroyer of Worlds and Heart of Darkness. In late 2025, Free League also introduced a new Alien RPG Evolved Edition, which features a number of rules adjustments and is technically the second edition of the game, while also remaining fully compatible with previous first edition content.

What is Alien: Operation Leading Edge?
Operation Leading Edge is a complete, standalone cinematic adventure designed for 3–5 players and a Game Mother (the Alien RPG version of a GM). It serves as the second instalment in the Jeremiah Saga, which is a planned trilogy that started in the 2025 expansion Rapture Protocol (although you don’t have to have played it to run Operation Leading Edge). In the adventure, players take on the roles of Colonial Marines deployed to the remote moon of Jeremiah VI on what is supposed to be a “routine drop n’ stop” mission to secure a mineral deposit, only to discover a terrifying xenomorph threat.
The physical boxed set includes:
- The main Operation Leading Edge adventure book.
- Two 34 x 22-inch double-sided maps detailing key locations.
- Five pre-generated characters.
- Playing cards for NPCs and PC personal agendas.
- Cardboard tokens for characters and creatures.
- GM maps and player handouts.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a starter set, so you will need either the first edition or Evolved second edition Alien RPG core rules to run it.

How much is Operation Leading Edge?
The physical box set will retail for $42 USD (not including shipping and handling). Notably, if you pre-order directly from Free League you’ll also be able to snag the PDF for free. Separate standalone PDFs will also be available in the near future from DriveThruRPG, although a price has not yet been listed.
When is Operation Leading Edge coming out?
The expansion is scheduled for release in Q4 2026, at which point it will be fully available from physical and online retailers. We’ll update this page with an exact date once it’s been confirmed by Free League.

What other tie-in accessories are available?
While you can run the adventure using just what’s included in the box set, an optional Miniatures Set is also available. It contains 20 fully-assembled figures, including 7 Colonial Marines, 7 members of the Union of Progressive Peoples and six xenomorphs.
The set also includes a booklet with simplified combat rules and a scenario generator for running skirmish battles using the miniatures. It retails for around $65 USD (not including shipping and handling).

Why we’re excited about Operation Leading Edge
- Expansion of the Jeremiah Saga: Rapture Protocol is an absolutely epic standalone set for the Alien RPG, so it’ll be interesting to see how this new expansion connects and builds upon the setting and narrative.
- Dropping in with the Marines: The USCMC is one of the most iconic and unique aspects of the Alien universe and the idea of being able to suit up with a squad of grunts sounds absolutely badass.
- More cinematic play: While running a long-term Alien campaign is possible, the game feels like it works best when it plays like one of the films, so having another tight and terrifying cinematic expansion seems like a smart move on the part of Free League.
- The art and hand outs: Free League absolutely kills it when its comes to production value, and we’re looking forward to getting our hands on the maps, tokens and player-facing content.

Final thoughts
Free League’s Alien RPG continues to be a massive hit, proving just what’s possible when a beloved pop culture IP is thoughtfully adapted for the tabletop. With the upcoming Operation Leading Edge, it looks like there’s still plenty more xenomorphic goodness to go around.
We’ll be doing a complete review of the box set closer to launch at the end of 2026. In the meantime, you can pre-order the PDF from DriveThruRPG and physical copies from your local game store, Free League, and Amazon.
