Elderbrain’s New D&D 5E Campaign is an Epic Nightmare Sandbox

While Dungeons & Dragons has seen its fair share of bleak settings before, there are few that come anywhere close to the level of Elderbrain’s new Spawns of the Mindrender. An over-the-top mix of dark fantasy, Lovecraftian horror, high technology and post-apocalyptic nightmare fuel, it’s also the focal point of a 600-page high-level campaign that’s compatible with both D&D 5E and D&D 5.5E.

Developed in collaboration with TTRPG legend and Forgotten Realms creator Ed Greenwood, the campaign also includes 24 new subclasses, plus dozens of new monsters, magic items, spells and feats. The project has launched as a crowdfunder (which is already close to topping the $200,000 USD mark) and is running from now until June 4th, 2026 on BackerKit.

So just what high-level horrors await players willing to take on the Spawns of the Mindrender? Below, we hack and slash our way through all the details.

What is the Spawns of the Mindrender campaign about?

Spawns of the Mindrender is a high-level D&D 5E. sandbox-style campaign set in the harsh, mountainous realm of Vordan; a brutal, war-torn land where the gods have long been abandoned and magic has been universally outlawed.

Designed to take players from Levels 11 to 15, the story kicks off when the characters are tasked with recovering a magical relic and soon find themselves navigating brutal factions and the influence of a horrific otherworldly entity known as Shandar the Mindrender. Along the way they’ll face ancient technology powered by arcane energy and hideous monsters twisted by cosmic corruption.

In addition to the adventure, the book also includes:

  • 24 new subclasses (two for each class)
  • 50+ new monsters
  • 30+ new magic items, weapons, poisons and tools
  • 20+ new spells and feats
  • 10+ fully fleshed-out factions
  • New rules for running large-scale battles

One interesting thing to note is that the book is also based directly on player feedback from members of publisher Elderbrain’s existing community on social media and Discord (which they refer to as their “Hive Mind”), with each book based on a 100-question survey and key elements such as names, locations and player options also voted on by members during crowdfunding.

What are the backer options for Spawns of the Mindrender?

The primary draw of the BackerKit is a 600+ page book, along with a player options booklet, gazetteer and map pack. It’s worth noting, however, that the base adventure is designed for the 2014 D&D 5E, but does come with a conversion guide to adapt the material to the 2024 D&D 5.5E rules.

The crowdfunder also features a number of other accessories and add-ons, including posters, handouts, art prints, stickers, a DM screen, dice, cards, miniatures and STL files.

Who is Elderbrain?

Elderbrain is a tabletop RPG studio based in Hungary and founded by Gábor Dán, who also serves as the company’s CEO. The studio first rose to international prominence with the release of Crown of the Oathbreaker, a massive campaign adventure for D&D 5E and Pathfinder 2E first launched via a successful Kickstarter back in 2020. This project was also the first to utilize the publisher’s “Hive Mind” approach in terms of actively soliciting backer and community feedback to guide the overall direction of the project.

That project was followed up by Torrents of the Spellhoarder in 2022 and Scepter of the Lightbringer in 2024, both of which are massive D&D 5E campaigns that were first launched as highly successful Kickstarters and have been well received by both fans and TTRPG critics.

Why we’re excited about Spawns of the Mindrender

  • A massive high-level campaign: Most D&D 5E adventures fizzle out before Level 9, so it’s amazing to see a Tier 3 campaign that actually lets players stretch their high-level muscles.
  • The community-backed concept: The mix of high technology, post-apocalyptic sorcery, the Cthulhu Mythos and D&D sounds gonzo in the best possible way, particularly when you consider that it was shaped largely by community feedback.
  • The art and design: Elderbrain books are absolutely gorgeous and from the art we’ve seen so far, Spawns of the Mindrender looks to follow the trend. It’ll also be interesting to see more about the contributions of D&D legend Ed Greenwood.
  • Bang for your buck: From a complete campaign to a gazetteer, map pack and player guide, the sheer amount of content looks impressive (which is pretty much par for the course for Elderbrain products).

Final Thoughts

Spawns of the Mindrender looks like another major hit from Elderbrain and it’s great to see a publisher not only pushing the envelope in terms of genre and. scope, but also actively listening to the community in terms of the content they want to see.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this project in the days ahead. In the meantime, you can back it and learn more from now until June 4th, 2026 on BackerKit.
