New Fallout RPG Solo Book Lets You Go It Alone in the Wasteland

The radioactive ruins of the Fallout universe are about to get a lot lonelier—in the best possible way. Modiphius Entertainment has just announced Wasteland Wanderer, a new, upcoming solo experience for the Fallout RPG that lets players explore the post-apocalyptic world without the need for a Game Master or a group.

Designed for players who love narrative journaling, procedural storytelling or who simply can’t wrangle together enough players, Wasteland Wanderer adapts the Fallout RPG core rules and lore to a fully self-guided format. The book will be coming out later this spring, but you can pre-order it now from your local game store and the Modiphius website. Below, we fire up our Pip-Boy and take a look at all the details.

What is the Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer solo RPG book about?

Wasteland Wanderer is a 256-page sourcebook that’s compatible with the Fallout RPG. Mechanically, the game uses Modiphius’ 2d20 system and takes a similar to the approach to the solo play of format we’ve seen in Modiphius’ Star Trek Adventures Captain’s Log series. The book is broken out into the following chapters:

  • Chapter One: Introduction: This explains what the Wasteland is and sets expectations for solo play. It also introduces Pip-Boy sheets and other tools that support journaling and self-guided play.
  • Chapter Two: The Wasteland of America: This delves into Fallout lore, providing an overview of the post-apocalyptic United States. It covers major regions, including the West Coast, Mojave Wasteland, Capital Wasteland, Commonwealth and Appalachia.
  • Chapter Three: Character Creation: This walks players through the step-by-step process of creating a solo Fallout RPG character, with everything from defining your Vault origins to assigning S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes, skills, health, luck and starting gear.

  • Chapter Four: How to Play: This breaks out the core mechanics of the solo system, explaining skill tests, action points, health, luck, combat and status effects. It also looks at how to determine goals, obstacles and solutions without a GM.
  • Chapter Five: Telling Your Story: This section explains how a game round works, breaking play into Travel, Encounter, Action, and Journal phases. It also shows players how to turn dice rolls and tables into meaningful narrative moments.
  • Chapter Six: Quests: This part of the book looks at how to generate and structure side quests within a solo campaign and includes tools for creating objectives, complications and narrative hooks.
  • Chapter Seven: Appendices: This final reference section includes perks, roll tables, encounter generators, equipment lists, loot tables, enemy generators and Pip-Boy diagrams.

How Much Is Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer?

The new sourcebook will retail for $55 USD (not including shipping and handling). Notably, if you pre-order now you’ll also receive the PDF version for free right away. The PDF will also likely be sold separately on DriveThruRPG at some point (although a price has not yet been confirmed).

When Does Wasteland Wanderer Release?

Modiphius has said that Wasteland Wanderer will be released in late April 2026, at which point it will be available online and at physical retailers. We’ll update this page with an exact date once it’s been confirmed.

Why Wasteland Wanderer is worth picking up

If you’re worried that going it alone against the mutant hordes might not be your irradiated cup of tea, below are a few reasons to consider grabbing the book.

  • Perfect for solo RPG fans: If you enjoy GM-less play, chances are you’ll dig the supplement. Modiphius also has a solid track record with solo systems, with their Star Trek Adventures Captain’s Log series being well received.
  • Authentic Fallout vibes: Vaults, wasteland travel, unpredictable encounters, canine companions and hard survival choices are all front and center in the new solo play rules.
  • Expands the Fallout RPG ecosystem: Adds long-term value to the core Fallout RPG by enabling entirely new ways to play and introducing new players to both the core game and Modiphius’ 2d20 system.
  • Structured but flexible design: The four-phase loop provides guidance without stifling creativity or narrative choice (which is something that other solo RPGs often struggle with).

Final Thoughts

Solo RPGs have grown significantly in popularity over the past few years, so creating sourcebooks like Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer seems like a smart move from Modiphius. Whether fans are willing to brave the Wasteland alone, however, remains to be seen.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this new book in the days ahead and will be offering a full review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order it now from your local game store and the Modiphius website.
