New Fomoria RPG Brings Blood, Beauty & Borg to Kickstarter

Over the past few years, the TTRPG industry has put out some absolutely gorgeous books, with the art often as much of a draw as the game mechanics. One of the latest crowdfunders, however, may put them all to shame.

Written and illustrated by ENNIE-award winning Spanish game designer, Tania Herrero (also known as The Bread Wyrm) with additional graphic design from MÖRK BORG creator Johan Nohr, Fomoria is a new folk horror RPG based on the MÖRK BORG rules. It’s also a game dripping with atmosphere, with some of the best artwork we’ve seen in ages.

The campaign, which has already crushed its initial funding goals, is running from now until April 22nd, 2026 on Kickstarter. Notably, fulfillment and a wider general release will be handled by Swedish publisher Free League (who also knows a thing or two about gorgeous books). Below, we take a look at one of the most visually striking crowdfunders to hit the TTRPG hobby in years.

What is the Fomoria RPG about?

Fomoria is set in a claustrophobic, subterranean world known as the Strata. In this realm deep below the earth, the sun is nothing more than a myth, replaced by the flickering glow of False Stars on cavern ceilings. Players take on the role of Folk, animal beings physically altered by generations of life in the deep. This includes bat folk, wolf folk, snake folk and even pangolin folk.

Each players also belongs to a Cabal (a specialized group drawn from various clans) tasked with navigating the shifting tunnels. Between the encroaching “Red Plague” and the ancient, eldritch gods that haunt the broken remnants of the world, survival depends on clinging to the last embers of community while braving a nightmare landscape.

Mechanically, Fomoria is powered by the MÖRK BORG system, utilizing its signature rules-light approach that prioritizes atmosphere and fast-paced play over crunch. Fomoria, however, it expands the core engine with a focus on character legacy and community ties.

The game introduces 8 Folk races and 6 Traditions (optional classes), alongside systems for gaining Renown. A standout feature is the “Wild Hunt” mechanic, where characters can literally track down and kill the ancient gods that dwell in the Strata. Arguably the most appealing part of the game, however, is the incredible artwork from Tania Herrero.

Why we’re excited about Fomoria

  • A new addition to MÖRK BORG: We’re huge fans of MÖRK BORG’s blend of atmospheric art and rule light mechanics, and Fomoria looks like it’s adding even more to one of the best indie TTRPG systems ever made.
  • The stunning art: The aesthetic that’s been developed here is absolutely stunning. The fact is, we’d probably back Fomoria for the art alone.
  • A genuinely unique setting: The sprawling subterranean world of the Strata sounds epic. Throw in folk horror, bizarre creatures and the ability to play a mutant bat humanoid trying to eat the hearts of an eldritch gods, and we are 100% in.
  • A Powerhouse Design Duo: Tania Hererro and Johan Nohr are both unbelievably talented game designers and artists. Throw in the involvement of Free League, and this project sounds like another win for the already creatively rich art-punk TTRPG movement.

Final thoughts

Over the past few years, we’ve seen some a number of innovative additions to the MÖRK BORG ecology. Fomoria, however, looks like it has the potential to evolve the system in a completely new way.

We’ve already backed the project, so will do a review once it’s been fulfilled. In the meantime, the campaign runs from now until April 22nd, 2026 on Kickstarter.
