D&D Releases Free Adventure from New Forgotten Realms Book

As a promotion for their upcoming D&D supplement Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn, Wizards of the Coast has just released a new free adventure entitled The Tenebrous Stone. The short module is designed for Level 3 characters and involves a brutal cult and a hoard of undead which threaten the safety of a nearby farming community.

For a limited time only you can grab the adventure now free on D&D Beyond, which also includes a free map which can be used with D&D Beyond Maps VTT. Below, we hack and slash through all the details.

What is the “The Tenebrous Stone” adventure about?

The Tenebrous Stone is an level 3 one-shot that can be run in about 2-3 hours. The action takes place in the remote kingdom of Damara (located in the frozen north eastern corner of the Forgotten Realms) near the farming village of Helmsdale. Players are tasked by the village elders to with tracking down a missing monk who was last seen in a nearby stone quarry that is now believed to have been taken over by an ancient evil.

Players will have to investigate the quarry, battling undead and cultists of the demon prince Orcus who have recently discovered a powerful relic that emits fear and despair. It’s a familiar set up, but also showcases the new adventure format that will be used in the upcoming Adventures in Faerûn DM supplement.

What is the “Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn”?

The new Adventures in Faerûn book (which features The Tenebrous Stone) is slated for release on November 11th, 2025 and contains content specifically designed for Dungeon Masters, including:

  • 50+ “pick up and play” adventure outlines for levels 1–15
  • The Lost Library of Lethchauntos starter adventure for characters levels 1-3
  • 37 monsters (including the Drow of Lolth)
  • 12 magic items
  • Regional Bastion options for building strongholds
  • 52 maps with tokens, fog of war, and stickers for the D&D Beyond Maps VTT

The book also contains gazeteer-style write ups on the locations of Baldur’s Gate, Calimshan, The Dalelands, the Moonshae Isles and Icewind Dale. Each location is designed to emphasize a specific genre and style of gameplay. For example, Baldur’s Gate is all about urban fantasy, while Icewind Dale leans into survival horror.

The book will also briefly touch on several areas of Faerûn that have not been covered in detail in previous D&D materials, in addition to including new artwork and content inspired by the popular Baldur’s Gate 3 video game.

Final Thoughts

The Tenebrous Stone adventure on D&D Beyond offers a solid sneak peak into what we can expect from the so-called “pick up and play” adventures that will be included in the upcoming Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerûn DM supplement. Whether or not this type of module will resonate with players, however, remains to be seen.
