Pendragon RPG Returns With New Classic Edition Kickstarter

Few tabletop roleplaying games have ever captured the epic fantasy of the Arthurian legend quite like the Pendragon RPG. Now, nearly forty years after its original publication, Chaosium has returned to the game’s roots with the Pendragon: Classic Edition, a faithful reprint of the 1st Edition boxed set that started it all.

Currently running on Kickstarter, the project has already far surpassed its initial funding goal and includes both the original box set materials as well as other early supplements and stretch goal content including maps, dice and a GM screen. Below, we lower our lances and charge into all the details.

What Is the Pendragon RPG?

Pendragon is a tabletop RPG published by Chaosium that’s set during the mythic age of King Arthur, with players taking on the role knights, nobles, druids and noble families bound by the ideals of chivalry, honor, and destiny. It’s a world steeped in the tenants of Camelot, with players swearing fealty to powerful lords, joining quests for the Holy Grail and navigating the political and moral struggles that define Arthur’s Britain.

Magic is a part of the setting, but plays a much smaller and more focused role than in other fantasy TTRPGs (such as Dungeons & Dragons) and tends to be wielded by notable NPCs, rather than players. Monsters and other inhuman creatures are also extremely rare, with the setting focusing more on human drama and interactions.

Unlike most RPGs that focus purely on adventuring parties and dungeon crawls, the Pendragon RPG uses a system that tracks entire generations of characters. Each session can represent seasons, years or even decades, with players taking on the role of a line of descendants over the course of play. Players also track key traits such Loyalty, Honor, Love and Hospitality, all of which have in-game effects. Other key mechanics are derived from Chaosium’s Basic Roleplaying engine, emphasizing narrative decisions over dice rolls and rewarding characters who embody the ideals (and flaws) of Arthurian heroism.

First published in 1985 by Chaosium (who still retains the license) and designed by the late Greg Stafford, Pendragon remained a popular TTRPG (although often overshadowed by more well known titles like Dungeons & Dragons). Over the years, the game has also evolved considerably across multiple editions, with the most recent 6th edition launched by Chaosium in 2023.

Why back the “Pendragon: Classic Edition” on Kickstarter?

  • A true collector’s item: The first edition has long been out of print and nearly impossible to find complete in good condition, so this new set offers a chance to get a true piece of TTRPG history.
  • A perfect entry point: If you haven’t already played Pendragon, this is a great choice for trying out the game for yourself as the rules and content still definitely hold up even 40 years later.
  • Preserved authenticity: Chaosium is keeping the design “as black and white as possible,” honoring the original layout and art, while use new printing techniques and paper.
  • A low risk backing: The content is already complete and nearly print-ready, making this a safe, nostalgia-fueled campaign. The initial backing also indicates that this project is likely going to be a big one for Chaosium.

Pendragon: Classic Edition isn’t just a reprint, it’s a restoration of one of TTRPG’s most iconic and unique box sets. Judging by the early success of the Kickstarter, it’s also a legend that’s likely going to live on for a whole generation.
