What is the Star Trek Adventures Species Sourcebook?

The new Species Sourcebook is a 132-page, full-color supplement for Modiphius Entertainment’s Star Trek Adventures second edition (although the book is also fully compatible with the first edition of the game and the Captain’s Logo solo RPG). As the name suggests, it’s focused entirely on aliens and includes:

  • 60 alien species templates, each with backgrounds, values, attribute modifiers, traits, unique abilities and new species-specific rules. This includes classic Trek aliens like Bolians and Orions to more unusual offerings like the Jem’Hadar and Breen.
  • 120+ new species talents, usable with virtually any existing species or homebrew creation.
  • Rules for non-standard species, including androids, holograms, liberated Borg, Mirror Universe characters and Vau N’Akat.
  • Rules for creating new species, with guidance on building out stats, backgrounds and cultures.
  • Advice on roleplaying aliens, including the use of emotional states as traits.

Why is the Star Trek Adventures Species Sourcebook worth picking up?

If you’re a new or returning fan of Star Trek Adventures, there a few reasons why you may want to beam this book up into your collection.

  • Classic alien species: We’ve already seen a number of playable species appear in STA 2e over the past few years, but the book looks to be digging even deep into Trek lore to uncover some of the more unusual aliens.
  • New player options: While the book looks to be largely GM-focused, the inclusion of over 120 new talents offers a ton of potential for players outside the book.
  • New non-standard species: The options here sound absolutely amazing, with the ability to build your own version of Data from TNG or the Doctor from Voyager/Starfleet Academy.
  • Creative flexibility: The ability to create your own custom species is something we don’t see enough of in TTRPG books, so this feels like a solid addition.

Final thoughts

While it’s easy to view books like the Star Trek Adventures Species Sourcebook as optional, this feels like it has the potential to become an essential expansion for the game. Whether or not it boldly goes where fans want it, however, remains to be seen.

We’ll be doing a complete review closer to launch, but in the meantime you can pre-order your copy now from Modiphius website.
