Hit Point Press, the TTRPG studio behind The Deck of Many Things and Humblewood, has just unpotted their latest release, The Field Guide to Floral Dragons. First blossoming to life in 2024 as a Kickstarter that harvested over $1.1 million USD in crowdfunding, this unusual monster manual is designed for the D&D 5e rule set and invites players to encounter, befriend or battle flower-inspired dragons. It includes over two dozen original stat blocks with accompanying art and lore, covering everything from the serene Rhododendron Dragon to the thorn-covered Rose Dragon.

You can pick up the book now from your local game store and the Hit Point Press website. Below, we stop and pluck all the details.

What is “The Field Guide to Floral Dragons” about?

The Field Guide to Floral Dragons is a 222-page supplement for the Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition rules (2014 variant) that is published by Hit Point Press and written and illustrated by noted TTRPG artist Kin Wald. Inside, book features a range of new dragons, each one of which is inspired by a real world flower and possessing its own unique ecology, temperament and magical abilities.

The design is meant to capture the tone of How to Train Your Dragon and Dragonology, presented in a style reminiscent of a Victorian naturalist’s field journal. It includes:

  • 25+ new stat blocks for floral dragons, pests, pollinators and fungi.
  • 10 new magic items and poisons inspired by the flora of the dragon realm.
  • Lore-rich entries detailing each dragon’s origin, biology and relationship with other creatures.
  • Researcher margin notes that reveal an underlying story of curiosity, revenge and redemption.

Notably, the standard hardcover version is 6 x 9 inches, so a bit smaller than the usual TTRPG hardcovers you see from Wizards of the Coast, which are around 8.5 x 11 inches.

Why is The Field Guide to Floral Dragons worth picking up?

  • A unique draconic concept: There’s no shortage of dragon books for D&D 5e, but this product offers a unique botanical bestiary we haven’t ever really seen before.
  • D&D 5e compatible: This means that it essentially works for D&D 2014, D&D 2024, Tales of the Valiant and virtually any other system using 5e as a base.
  • Unique artwork: Features illustrations by Kin Wald that are absolutely stunning and unlike a lot of traditional fantasy TTRPG illustrations
  • High production value: Hit Point Press has a proven track record of releasing some solid TTRPG products and with over a $1 million in Kickstarter backing, the book is likely going to meet their high bar when it comes to quality.

Final Thoughts

The Field Guide to Floral Dragons looks to be both a monster manual, an art book and a love letter to gardening, making it one of the more unusual draconic tomes ever produced for D&D 5e.
