Twilight 2000 Returns to the Ruins with “Operation Reset”

The remains of post-World War III Europe are about to become a new battleground, with Free League Publishing recently announcing Operation Reset, a major new campaign supplement for the fourth edition of Twilight: 2000; the studio’s popular post-apocalyptic military roleplaying game. The book won’t be officially released until the spring of 2026, although it is available now for pre-order.

Notably, the supplement serves as the grand finale to the narrative arc introduced in Urban Operations (published in 2022) and Hostile Waters (released in 2024), with players heading into the devastated remains of Warsaw and Stockholm. Below, we lock and load and take aim at all the details.

What is Twilight: 2000?

Twilight: 2000 is a gritty, sandbox-style tabeltop roleplaying game set in an alternate timeline where World War III has plunged the planet into chaos. Civilization has collapsed, nations lie in ruins and players take on the roles of soldiers and survivors struggling to navigate a fractured Europe. The tone is grimly realistic, focusing on survival, resource management and moral dilemmas in a world where every bullet and ration counts.

First published by Game Designers’ Workshop (GDW) in 1984, Twilight: 2000 became one of the defining military TTRPGs of its era, tapping into Cold War fears among the time. The line was revived in 2021 by Free League Publishing and given an overhaul with more modern mechanics and updated lore, while preserving the tone of the original game.

Mechanically, the current fourth edition of Twilight: 2000 uses the Year Zero Engine (which is used for a variety of Free League games). The system emphasizes player agency, modular combat and emergent storytelling. The current edition is also known for its use of random tables, morale rules and hex-based travel with a heavy focus on realism and survival.

What is “Twilight 2000: Operation Reset”?

Operation Reset is the final chapter in a storyline introduced in Urban Operations and Hostile Waters. It also draws inspiration from the classic Ruins of Warsaw supplement published in 1985 for the original Twilight: 2000. In terms of content, Operation Reset focuses largely on the cities of Warsaw and Stockholm, although the scenarios can easily be adapted for any ruined metropolis in Europe. The book also includes:

  • New rules for mass battles, allowing players to command large-scale conflicts between surviving military forces.
  • New encounter cards tailored specifically for Operation Reset’s storyline.
  • Scenario and modular battle maps for urban exploration and tactical combat.
  • Double-sided poster maps depicting post-World War III Warsaw and Stockholm.

When will “Twilight 2000: Operation Reset” be available?

The book will be available in early spring 2026. However, if you pre-order now you’ll be given early access to a custom “Beta PDF” several months in advance.

How much is “Twilight 2000: Operation Reset”?

The hardcover book will cost $46.23 USD (not including shipping and handling). It’s not clear yet if a separate PDF version will also be available for purchase.

  • Classic homage: A spiritual successor to GDW’s Ruins of Warsaw, updated for Free League’s new edition.
  • Tactical depth: New mass battle mechanics that add a new level of strategy to the game.
  • Exra materials: Includes detailed maps, scenario cards and encounter tools for extended campaigns.

Final Thoughts

With Operation Reset, Free League continues its tradition of blending tactical realism with human storytelling, giving players one last chance to determine whether humanity can rebuild from the ashes. It remains to be seen, however, if players are willing to take one more trip into the wartorn ruins of Europe.

You can pre-order Twilight: 2000: Operation Reset now from Free League Publishing.
