New Kickstarter Offers the Ultimate Mega Dungeon for 5e

When it comes to tabletop role playing games, there’s no shortage of mega dungeons to choose from. A new project from adventure design studio Dungeon in a Box, however, is a new kind of dungeon crawl. Entitled Mega Dungeon: The Mines of Silverdeep, it’s being funded on Kickstarter and includes a complete campaign for D&D 5e, along with cards, tiles, decals, miniatures and 10 foot long physical map scrolls.

As of this writing, the Kickstarter has only been running for a few days and is already close to surpassing the $200,000 USD mark, with no signs of slowing down. So are The Mines of Silverdeep worth delving into? Below, we unroll all the details.

What Is “Mega Dungeon: Mines of Silverdeep?”

Mega Dungeon: The Mines of Silverdeep is a D&D 5e-compatible campaign designed for levels 1–12. The adventure takes place in the lost halls of Silverdeep, an ancient fortress that was once home to a powerful devil-prince known as Koztkil whose opulent palace was dragged deep underground by the gods themselves where his heart was torn from his chest. Over the centuries, the still-beating heart bled both rich veins of silver and a corrupting influence into the stone of the mountains themselves.

When the campaign begins, Koztkil’s heart has been rediscovered, awakening the ancient evil and forcing the players to delve deep into the sprawling depths of his former abode where they’ll encounter various factions, monsters and unique environments.

The boxed set includes the following:

  • Campaign Book: This hardcover is over 300 pages in length and includes both the adventure along with NPCs, factions, monsters and magic items. It also includes new player options, including subclasses, ancestries and rare “Silverblood weapons.” Notably, the book also includes new rules for a living town system that your party can grow and customize as they advance in levels (with decals that can be added onto a base town map).
  • 5 Double-Sided Scroll Maps: Each stretching up to 10 feet long when unrolled, when used together they cover 10 individual dungeon levels. They also includes a variety of terrain, such the local coastline surrounding the dungeon, a set of silver mines, an underground forest and the palace of the devil-prince Koztkil himself.
  • 48 Dungeon Expansion Rooms: These pieces can be added onto the larger scroll maps to offer different paths and secret areas.
  • 150+ Skinny Minis: These are 2D acrylic minis from Skinny Mini that feature unique art on the front and back.
  • 50+ Boon Cards: These are collected during the course of the adventure and can be used during combat.

If you’re interested in going digital, the project does also include VTT-ready maps and digital tokens for online play.

Why Back “Mega Dungeon: The Mines of Silverdeep”?

Here are a few solid reasons to get your torches and weapons ready and back the project on Kickstarter:

  • A Mega Dungeon in a Box: Few projects combine physical maps, minis, cards and a 5e campaign into one complete package, and almost none have featured an entire mega dungeon in this format.
  • Solid Production Value: Dungeon in a Box is known primarily for their monthly adventure subscription service, which definitely have a high level of production when it comes to their art and content, so it’s likely this will be the same.
  • Designed for In-Person Play: One of the biggest challenges with running a mega dungeon in person is how difficult it can be to display the maps. The Mines of Silverdeep might just solve this by including massive maps that can be unrolled as players discover new areas.

Final Thoughts

Mega Dungeon: The Mines of Silverdeep may just be the first D&D 5e compatible product to really offer a complete mega dungeon experience. And while getting everything you need isn’t exactly cheap, it’s not exactly outrageous either when you consider comparable high-end boxed products like Beadle & Grimm’s. In fact, in terms of bang for your buck, it offers a mega dungeon-sized amount of content that your party could easily get lost in for more than a few years.
