Shadowdark Western Reaches Kickstarter Hits $3 Million Mark

The runaway success of the Shadowdark RPG continues. In a recent email, creator Kelsey Dionne of the Arcane Library stated that the game’s recent Western Reaches Kickstarter has officially crossed $3 million USD in funding. The record-breaking support was driven in part by a surge of late pledges following the campaign’s conclusion in April 2025.

Although the Kickstarter itself has technically ended, Dionne also noted that late pledges will remain open until February 28th, 2026 and that all late backers will still receive unlocked stretch goals. With well over 16,000 backers and funding that now more than doubles the original Shadowdark Kickstarter from 2023, The Western Reaches has officially entered the ranks of one of the most successful independent tabletop RPG crowdfunders of all time. Below, we look at what this means for both Shadowdark and the hobby as a whole.

What is Shadowdark: The Western Reaches about?

The Western Reaches is an official setting expansion for the Shadowdark RPG written by Kelsey Dionne with original illustrations from artists including Cameron Maas and Andrew Beckwith. It’s designed to be a sandbox-first campaign environment that emphasizes exploration, open-ended discovery and player-driven narratives (with the name itself paying homage to the West Marches style of play).

The project includes two core books: a Player’s Guide and a Game Master’s Guide. It also contains three Cursed Scroll zines, which are short-self contained expansions featuring new classes, spells, monsters, hex crawls and setting details. These include River of Night (set in the sweltering Tal-Yool jungle) Dwellers In the Deep (focused on the Underdark-inspired world of Morzomotha) and City of Masks (the game’s first official urban setting).

Notably, the Kickstarter also included a number of additional product tie-ins, including a new cloth map of the Western Reaches a new Gamemaster screen, a deck of custom spell cards, a pad of tear-away character sheets and a series of two-page mini-adventures.

What this Means for Shadowdark

Reaching $3 million USD is a landmark moment, not just for Shadowdark but for tabletop role playing games a whole. By comparison, the original Shadowdark RPG Kickstarter in 2023 raised roughly $1.4 million USD, a figure that at that time was almost unheard of for an indie fantasy RPG with a relatively unknown creator and no major IP.

In fact, there are only a handful of other TTRPGs to have achieved this level of success (most notably Draw Steel and Brandon Sanderson’s Cosmere RPG), most of which are based on already existing franchises or coming from established publishers.

It’s proof that Shadowdark has become a major player in the hobby, gaining the kind of popularity and widespread adoption that puts it on par with systems like Daggerheart and Pathfinder in terms of offering serious competition to Dungeons & Dragons’ dominance of the market.

The timing of this news also matters. Over the past few years, Shadowdark has gained increased visibility through awards recognition (including snagging a 2024 ENNIE for Best Game) and an increasing number of tables at major conventions and widespread distribution to retail stores. The game is also seeing even more community support than ever, with creator Kelsey Dionne noting in a recent email that over the past year “There were 84 crowdfunding campaigns for third-party Shadowdark projects (more than any RPG other than 5e).”

What’s more the game has seen significant adaption within the actual play community, with several streamers choosing the system for ongoing campaigns. Most notably, the popular Glass Cannon Podcast launched a new Shadowdark actual play series back in October 2025.

Final Thoughts

Very few Kickstarter projects ever approach the $3 million mark, and even fewer do so without the backing of a legacy IP or major publisher. Shadowdark: The Western Reaches reaching this milestone places it not only firmly among the top tier of modern tabletop gaming success stories, but among Kickstarter projects in general.

With late pledges open until February 28th, 2026, the final total may still climb higher. Regardless, the message is already clear: Shadowdark is no longer just a breakout hit, it’s a major milestone in TTRPG history.
