It’s been a strange journey for the Exodus TTRPG. A spin-off to the upcoming Exodus video game, which is being developed by Wizards of the Coast studio Archetype Entertainment, the the pen-and-paper version was first announced by WotC back in November 2024, making it the first TTRPG they’ve published in decades that wasn’t Dungeons & Dragons.
Months later, in August of 2025, WotC quietly rolled out two physical books: The Traveler’s Handbook and The Exodus Encyclopedia, both of which were only available for purchase online and which sold out quickly. What was odd, however, is that there was literally no lead up or promotion of either book from WotC. The books were simply there and then gone.
Now, in yet another odd move, Wizards of the Coast is officially turning over the Exodus TTRPG to Renegade Game Studios, who will re-publish the Traveler’s Handbook alongside a new Creature Catalog in August of 2026. Notably, Renegade has a solid track record of handling this type of arrangement, having been a publisher for the World of Darkness TTRPG on behalf of White Wolf. Below, we take a closer look at what we can expect when Exodus finally arrives in force.

What is the Exodus TTRPG about?
The Exodus TTRPG is a science-fiction tabletop RPG set in the same universe as the upcoming Exodus video game (which is slated for release in early 2027). Players take on the role of human and post-human Travelers exploring the Centauri Cluster, a vast region of space filled with colonized worlds, alien species, abandoned starships, ancient ruins and powerful beings known as the Celestials. Incredibly advanced and ancient alien Remnant technology is also scattered throughout the galaxy, which can be as powerful as it is dangerous to use. Thematically, it’s a dark, sci-fi setting focused on exploration and survival.
Mechanically, the Exodus TTRPG uses the 2024 D&D 5E ruleset. It includes four base character classes: the Grifter (street-smart hustlers), the Hotshot (elite pilots), the Cataphract (mech-suit powered warriors), the Daemon (humans bonded with AI entities) and the Prodigy (individuals who can make use of Remnant tech). Each class has two subclasses and players can also choose from eight Origins (which are essentially the Exodus equivalent of D&D Backgrounds).

Time dilation is also a factor, with players able to travel through space for hours, only to find that decades may have passed on the planet they left. This is represented by a Dynasty system, that tracks the friends and family you’ve left behind.
Notably, the Exodus TTRPG was developed by James Ohlen, a veteran video game designer who worked on Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age: Origins and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Ohlen was leading design on the Exodus video game at Archetype Entertainment, but stepped down in December 2025 to take on a TTRPG design role at parent company Wizards of the Coast (it’s not clear what this role involves and whether his work was on D&D, Exodus or some other project).
Notably, Ohlen also founded Arcanum Worlds, a tabletop RPG studio that’s developed a number of third-party D&D 5E supplements, including the popular Chains of Asmodeus campaign (which Ohlen spearheaded). Material for both the Exodus video game and the TTRPG is also being developed by award-winning science fiction novelists Adrian Tchaikovsky and Peter F. Hamilton.

What are the new Exodus TTRPG books about?
Renegade Game Studios will be publishing two Exodus TTRPG books, both which were designed by Wizards of the Coast:
- The Traveler’s Handbook: This is essentially a reprint of the sold out book that was published by Wizards of the Coast in August 2025 (and which was only available for purchase online).
- Creature Catalog: This is a new book that’s essentially a bestiary of human and alien adversaries players may face in the Centauri Cluster.
Oddly, the Exodus Encyclopedia (which was also sold online by WotC in August 2025 and is essentially a GM’s guide) is not listed on Renegade’s roadmap.

It’s also possible that Renegade may produce and publish their own tie-in books, which is something we’ve seen them do with other TTRPGs. For example, they have produced their own Vampire: The Masquerade books, even though they don’t own the license.
Notably, on the official Exodus website they also mention an upcoming TTRPG product called Chronicles of Melayu, but does not provide a description. An October 2025 post on X from designer James Ohlen, however, describes it as a volume that “offers game masters a new setting, and a fully realized adventure to bring it to life.” It’s not clear, however, if this book will also be published by Renegade in the near future.

When are the new Exodus TTRPG books coming out?
Both the Traveler’s Handbook and the Creature Catalog will be released in August 2026 (an exact date has not been confirmed, but we’ll update this page once we know more). At that time the books should be available for purchase online and at a local game stores.
How much are the new Exodus TTRPG books?
Physical hardcover copies of the book will retail for $55 USD (not including shipping and handling). It’s not clear if PDF or digital versions will also be available, and what their price point will be. (Renegade Game Studio typically sells PDFs via DriveThruRPG.)

Final thoughts
The launch of the Exodus TTRPG hasn’t exactly been a smooth one, with Wizard of the Coast quietly releasing it with little fanfare before now handing it off to another publisher. It’s also unusual given that the video game it’s based on isn’t actually coming out until 2027.
Still, as a TTRPG it sounds promising, both conceptually and mechanically. The art also looks amazing, and the team working on it has a solid track record. Whether the game will resonate with players, however, is something we’ll have to wait to see.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the new books in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s made available. In the meantime, you can learn more on the official Exodus website.
