Big news for everyone’s favorite giant Japanese atomic lizard monster. Comic book publisher IDW has recently announced that they’re working on Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game, the first TTRPG of its kind to feature the legendary kaiju.
The game is scheduled to launch first on Kickstarter in March 2026 before a wider public release, and will take place in IDW’s recently published Godzilla comic book universe. Below, we smash apart all the details.

What is the Godzilla RPG about?
Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game will take place in the the “Kai-Sei Era,” the name for IDW’s shared Godzilla comic book universe that was recently launched in the summer of 2025. It’s an alternate post-apocalyptic version of our own world that’s been decimated by kaiju attacks, with the creatures created via a powerful and much sought after energy source known as “Kai-Sei.” Notably the IDW setting also has full licensing from Toho (the original license holders of Godzilla), so the material will contain nods to classic kaiju like Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah and of course, the titular Big Guy himself.
Players, however, won’t be taking on the role of any giant-sized monsters. Instead they’ll be playing as elite human operatives working for G-Force, a global task force dedicated to studying, containing and combating kaiju threats.
Unusually, the game will also be completely diceless. Instead the primary mechanics will be built around a standard deck of 52 playing cards, although it’s not entirely clear how this will work.

Who is making the Godzilla RPG?
The new RPG will be officially published by IDW Games, the tabletop game division of comic book publisher IDW. This is, however, one of the first TTRPGs they’ve ever developed.
The lead design team includes Jervis Johnson, Gav Thorpe and Mark A. Latham, all of whom are experienced designers and writers, and are perhaps best known for their contribution to both the lore and mechanics of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000.

When is the Godzilla RPG Coming Out?
The official Kickstarter campaign launches in March 2026. If the project funds successfully (which seems likely) fulfillment is expected in the Fall of 2026. IDW has also confirmed that wider retail distribution will follow shortly afterward, with the Godzilla RPG shipping to local game stores.
Notably, the game will also debut at PAX Unplugged 2025 in Philadelphia (which runs from November 21st to 25th), with attendees able take part in the first live playtests ahead of the Kickstarter launch.

Why a Godzilla RPG could actually be cool
- A First for the Big Guy: Despite Godzilla’s long history across multiple forms of media, this actually marks the first official tabletop RPG for the franchise.
- Card-Based System: Swapping dice for a card-driven mechanic sounds like an intriguing concept that could help the game stand out in an increasingly crowded TTRPG market.
- A Veteran Design Team: The creative team’s pedigree when it comes to both game and narrative design is second to none, so there’s a good chance they’ll develop something genuinely cool.
- Massive Setting Potential: While IDW’s own comic book universe will be front and center, we’re still looking at over 70 years of lore to draw on within the game.

Final Thoughts
While you could fill a kaiju-sized crater with the number of terrible games based on popular IPs, there’s reason to be hopeful about the Godzilla RPG. The game has some top tier designers, a unique setting and the backing of a major entertainment company.
In the meantime, we’ll be keeping our Geiger counters on standby and will update this page with new information as it’s made available.
