Legendary Japanese RPG video game franchise Phantasy Star has officially made the leap from consoles to the tabletop. Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying from Skydawn Game Studios is now available as a PDF on DriveThruRPG, with a hardcover print version scheduled for later next year.
First announced in 2024 in partnership with SEGA, the new TTRPG adapts the beloved video game universe into a fully fledged pen-and-paper roleplaying experience. The new core rulebook features streamlined D20 mechanics, detailed galactic lore and everything players need to create characters, pilot starships and battle ancient evils among the stars. What is Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying?
Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying is based on the original JRPG video game series and is created by Skydawn Games with an official license from SEGA. The game taps into the popular video game franchise’s blend of magic and technology, with players facing down galactic tyrants, rogue AI and cosmic gods.
The rules are based on Skydawn Game Studio’s Esper Genesis, which is essentially a sci-fi variant of the D&D 5e ruleset. The system includes familiar D20 mechanics such as ability checks, saving throws and attack rolls, but replaces fantasy magic with “Esper powers,” a form of advanced energy manipulation. The Phantasy Star TTRPG variant of the Esper Genesis rules has been modified slightly, and features new mechanics inspired by the video game series, including Fate Points, Item Grades and Combo Attacks.
What’s included in the Phantasy Star Core Rulebook?
The Phantasy Star Tabletop Roleplaying Game core rulebook is 228-pages and includes the following:
- Character creation rules for classes inspired by Phantasy Star (Hunters, Rangers and Mystics)
- New combat and narrative mechanics including Combo Attacks and Fate Points.

When were the Phantasy Star TTRPG Core Rules released?

What is the Phantasy Star video game series?
Set in the distant Algol Star System, Phantasy Star is a series of video games that blends science fiction and fantasy and is known for its blend of sword-and-sorcery aesthetics with high-tech starships, robots and magic-wielding heroes.
Over the years the lore of the franchise has changed significantly, moving outside of the Algol System into other words and featuring a new cast of character, but many of the core themes remain the same, with heroes often facing the tyrant King Lashiec and battling against the entity known as Dark Force. In this sense, it’s similar to the popular Final Fantasy video game series.
In the real world, the Phantasy Star franchise began in 1987 with the original Sega Master System release. It was one of the first console RPGs to feature a female protagonist, Alis Landale (who notably, appears on the cover of the new TTRPG). Its sequels (Phantasy Star II–IV) were released in the late 1980s and early 1990s, followed by Phantasy Star Online in 2000, which brought the series into the MMORPG era. This was followed by several other spin-off games, including Phantasy Star Universe in 2006 and Phantasy Star Online 2 in 2012 (which was later remastered and ported over to the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One).
The series has also appeared in a variety of other mediums, including both a manga series and anime series, as well as an art book released by SEGA and featuring original illustrations from the series.
