New Call of Cthulhu Adventure Returns to 1980s Japan

Chaosium Games returns to the dark shadows of the Land of the Rising Sun with Carcosa Manifest, the latest supplement for Call of Cthulhu’s The Sutra of Pale Leaves series set in the neon sprawl of 1980s Japan. The book is available now from your local game store, DriveThruRPG and Choasium.

A follow up to The Sutra of Pale Leaves: Twin Suns Rising (which was released in June of 2025), Carcosa Manifest expands the mythos and plunges investigators further into the strange dreams and occult machinations of the dreaded King in Yellow. Below, we take a closer look at what Keepers and players can expect.

What is “The Sutra of Pale: Leaves Carcosa Manifest”?

Carcosa Manifest is slated as the next chapter in the Sutra of Pale Leaves sag, the campaign extension set in 1980s Japan during a time in which traditional folklore and modernization are colliding. Carcosa Manifest builds on the foundation laid by Twin Suns Rising, exploring new threads of cosmic dread and the occult webs that bind Tokyo’s city lights to dark, otherworldly powers.

The book contains four adventures that can be played as standalone adventures or run concurrently as a complete campaign:

  • The Bridge Maiden Part 1: Players must track down a missing person with ties to Tokyo’s fashion scene.
  • The Bridge Maiden Part 2: Following the clues leads to a terrifying discovery and eldritch showdown.
  • Wonderland: Players must investigate a mysterious new video game with the power to wrap reality.
  • The Fixer: Players investigate a dark shadow realm lurking beneath the steel and glass of Tokyo.

Why is Call of Cthulhu: Carcosa Manifest worth picking up?

  • A unique new horror setting: For almost 50 years Call of Cthulhu has has the same overall setting of the 1920s New England. The Sutra of Pale Leaves series offers a new setting that’s genuinely unique and influenced by Japanese culture.
  • Japanese horror folkore: The Call of Cthulhu Mythos has been wall established, but Carcoas Manifest (and it’s predecessor Twin Suns Rising) dips into Japanese folkore to unleash new horrors on players.
  • Adventure flexibility: The book offers the potential for adventures to be run as a complete campaign, standalone adventures or a continuation of Twin Suns Rising, which is the kind of flexibility you don’t often see in Call of Cthulhu products.
  • High production values: The new book was developed by The Sons of Singularity in collaboration with Chaosium, a team with a ton of experience and pedigree when it comes to past Call of Cthulhu adventures.

Final Thoughts

Carcosa Manifest looks a solid continuation of the Twin Suns Rising supplement in exploring a new dark eldritch world of 1980s Japan. If it’s well received by players, it’s likely we’ll continue to see more nightmares coming soon from the The Sutra of Pale Leaves series.

You can pick up the new book now from your local game store, DriveThruRPG and Choasium.
