Old Gods of Appalachia RPG Unveils New Book for GMs

The shadowy backwoods of Americana are about to get more terrifying, with Monte Cook Games recently unveiling All Your Gods Are Dead, an upcoming supplement for Old Gods of Appalachia: The Roleplaying Game. The book is designed primarily for Game Masters and expands on the world of alternate Appalachia with new creatures, artifacts and rules designed to capture the game’s signature blend of folklore and cosmic horror.

Scheduled for release in early 2026, All Your Gods Are Dead is available for pre-order now in hardcover and PDF format directly from Monte Cook Games. Below, we take a closer look at what players can expect inside from this descent into the dark hills of Appalachia.

What’s “All Your Gods Are Dead” about?

All Your Gods Are Dead is a 128-page GM supplement for the Old Gods of Appalachia RPG written by award-winning designer Shanna Germain (who was a key contributor to the game’s core rules). The book includes:

  • Update GM advice and tips: Detailed guidance for running horror-driven campaigns (something which hasn’t really been covered in depth in past materials, including the Core Rules).
  • New cyphers and artifacts: A collection of magical items that offer great power (with a cost).
  • Expanded rules: Optional systems for handling rituals, possessions and character choices, with a focus on heightening the sense of dread and consequence at the table.
  • New creatures and NPCs: Entities of both mythic power and everyday menace to populate the forests, towns and forgotten hollers of Appalachia.
  • Custom GM intrusions: Thematic suggestions that tie directly into the setting’s major forces like the Green, the Inner Dark and the natural world.

How much is All Your Gods Are Dead?

The hardcover version of the book is available for $44.99 USD (not including shipping and handling) while the PDF is available for $17.99 USD. You can also purchase both products as a bundle for $50.39 USD.

Notably, you can also download a free preview from the Monte Cook Games website, which gives a general sense of the content and what to expect.

What is the Old Gods of Appalachia RPG?

Old Gods of Appalachia: The Roleplaying Game is set in an alternate version of the Appalachian Mountains and blends cosmic horror with regional folklore. It’s a setting where coal towns, mist-shrouded hollers, and forgotten mines hide ancient, sleeping powers. Like other popular horror TTRPGs such as Call of Cthulhu, players take on the roles of ordinary people drawn into extraordinary darkness and must confront the things that stir beneath the soil and within the shadows of the mountains.

The game runs on Monte Cook Games’ Cypher System, a rules-light engine that emphasizes narrative storytelling and player-driven choices. Its mechanics are designed to build tension, allowing GMs to weave tales steeped in dread, mystery and sacrifice while keeping gameplay accessible and fast-paced.

The Old Gods of Appalachia RPG was first announced in 2021 as a collaboration between Monte Cook Games and Steve Shell and Cam Collins, the creators of the award-winning Old Gods of Appalachia horror podcast. In early 2022, the team launch a Kickstarter campaign, which raised over $2 million USD and becoming one of the most successful tabletop RPG campaigns in recent years. The core rulebook was later released in 2023 by Monte Cook Games and the line has since expanded with several new supplements, adventures and digital tools.

Why is All Your Gods Are Dead worth picking up?

  • A focused GM resource: This book is aimed squarely at game masters looking to deepen their campaigns with new material and mechanical options (something which we haven’t really seen before for the game).
  • Expanded horror mechanics: The inclusion of new rules for rituals, possessions and curses gives GMs more ways to evoke tension and fear and really bring the game to life.
  • High production value: The book offers a ton of new content that really helps expand the setting, but the preview also demonstrates the incredible artwork we’ve seen from previous books in the line.
  • Written by a core designer: Author Shanna Germain was instrumental in developing the Old Gods of Appalachia RPG core rules and has worked on a number of award-winning TTRPG projects, so the quality of the book is likely going ot be high.

Final Thoughts

All Your Gods Are Dead builds on the success of Old Gods of Appalachia by providing game masters with tools that really haven’t been available before. It remains to be seen, however, if this terrifying new tome brings even more players into the dark nightmare-fueled depths of America’s backwoods.

You can preorder All Your Gods Are Dead now from your local game store or the Monte Cook website.
