Vampire: The Masquerade 6th edition will soon be upon us. The news was announced at Gen Con 2026 by World of Darkness Creative Director Jess Lanzillo after months of speculation. It also marks the first major project for the recently resurrected White Wolf Studios, which was shuttered in 2018 following a controversial launch of the fifth edition of the game and only recently brought back to life in 2025.
The new V6 edition will feature a completely different ruleset and will not be backwards compatible with V5. It will, however, carry over many of the same characters and metaplots from the previous edition. Players and Storytellers can test out a beta version of the new rules exclusively on Demiplane.
Below, we unleash our inner Beast and drink up all the details.

What is Vampire: The Masquerade 6th edition?
On a new FAQ page on the official World of Darkness website, additional information was revealed about the new edition. Key changes, new mechanics and returning systems are as follows:
New mechanics
- Drama: This is a meta currency that Storytellers can spend to add narrative complications and twists during play.
- Quickening: This mechanic rewards players for rolling well, giving them a resource they can spend in future situations.
- Vitae: Health and Blood Points have now been combined into a single resource called Vitae.
- Devil’s Bargain: The player can make a deal with the Storyteller to secure a success by paying a narrative price.
- Choose Your Pain: In dire moments (and at the Storyteller’s discretion), players can choose a negative narrative consequence.
- Safety tools: Players and Storytellers will now be able to easily find safety tools through explicit callouts in the rules.

Updated mechanics
- Dice pools: V6 will use regular D10s, rather than the specialized dice from V5 (including Hunger dice). Players also roll almost all the dice, with the Storyteller very rarely making checks.
- Difficulty: The new rules now significantly reduce the number of dice you roll on a test.
- Humanity Scale: The Humanity tracker from V5 has been updated to a new system called the Humanity Scale, which functions differently.
- Discipline powers: Each Discipline will have multiple powers, and many Discipline powers now scale with you. The final book will include powers for each Discipline ranging up to 5 dots.
- Physical and social conflict: These two different elements from V5 are now a single unified ruleset in V6.

What’s staying the same
- Clans: The familiar clans from V5 and previous editions will carry over to V6. There will be 14 clans total in the new book (notably, the alpha playtest on Demiplane includes 7 so far: Brujah, Gangrel, Lasombra, Ministry, Nosferatu, Toreador, and Ventrue).
- Vampirism stages: Players will still have the option to become a ghoul, a duskborn, neonate, ancilla, caitiff or elder.
- Sects: Popular factions will also carry over into V5, with players able to join Camarilla, the Anarchs, the Sabbat, Independents or The Unbound.

When will Vampire: the Masquerade 6th edition be released?
An exact release date for V6 has not been confirmed by White Wolf or parent company Paradox Entertainment. On their website they simply note: “We are still in the alpha phase of development and want to ensure we can polish the material and implement the valuable feedback we’re receiving before we announce specifics like a release date or cost.”
Notably, the Demiplane playtest allows users to provide detailed feedback on the new mechanics, with both Player and Storyteller packs available for free to users.

Will other World of Darkness franchises also be getting new editions?
According to White Wolf, for now they are exclusively focused on the new edition of Vampire: the Masquerade, but during their official Gen Con press conference they announced that they are considering developing new editions for Vampire: the Dark Ages, Mage: the Ascension and Changeling the Dreaming.
They also noted that they are re-evaluating both Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Hunter: The Recokoning.

What happened with White Wolf and Vampire: The Masquerade?
First released in 1991, Vampire: The Masquerade has gone through a number of major transitions over the years. After releasing hundreds of books over the span of a decade, in the early 2000s publisher White Wolf ran into financial trouble and the license to the game (and the larger World of Darkness franchise) was acquired in 2006 by Icelandic video game studio CCP (creators of the popular EVE Online MMORPG). In 2015, the license was again sold to Swedish video game studio Paradox Interactive (who is best known for real-time strategy titles such as Europa Universalis and Crusader Kings).
In 2018, Paradox and White Wolf were under intense media scrutiny after releasing the fifth edition of Vampire: The Masquerade, which included explicit references to neo-Nazis, pedophilia and homophobia, with many fans and industry watchers speculating that the content was designed to appeal to far-right hate groups. As a result of the scandal, Paradox shuttered the White Wolf studio and hired third-party publishers Modiphius Entertainment and Renegade Game Studios to develop new products under license.

In May 2025, however, Paradox relaunched White Wolf, with the revamped publisher now operating largely as an independent entity that would oversee World of Darkness and Vampire: The Masquerade products, including video games, TTRPGs, board games and other media. A few months later in July 2025, former Dungeons & Dragons executive Jess Lanzillo joined White Wolf as the new Creative Director, and in December 2025 indie RPG creator Diogo Nogueira was hired as Lead Game Designer.
The new VtM project being announced at this year’s Gen Con will be the first official title to be released from Paradox’s revamped White Wolf studio.

Final thoughts
A new sixth edition of Vampire: the Masquerade marks a major milestone for the game, both mechanically and in terms of shaking off some of the controversy surrounding it and building on its legacy. Whether V6 will be able to bring new blood to the franchise, however, remains to be seen.
We’ll be keeping a close on this story in the days ahead and will update this page with new information as it’s released. In the meantime, you can lear more on the official World of Darkness website and test out a beta version of the V6 rules on Demiplane.
