One of Marvel comics’ most iconic storylines is heading to the tabletop, with a new Secret Wars expansion recently unveiled for the Marvel Multiverse RPG. The new sourcebook is loosely based on the nine-issue Secret Wars comic book mini-series from 2015, which itself is an inspiration for the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars MCU film, slated for release in 2027.

The new Secret Wars RPG sourcebook will be coming out later this summer, but you can pre-order it now from your local game store and on Amazon. Below, we slap on our spandex and head to Battleworld to uncover all the details.

What is the new Marvel Multiverse RPG: Secret Wars expansion?

According to a recent post from Marvel.com, the new Secret Wars Expansion is a 256-page sourcebook for use with the existing Marvel Multiverse RPG core rules. The content is based on the most recent Secret Wars comic book mini-series (which itself is loosely related to the original twelve-issue Secret Wars series first published in 1984).

In that particular storyline, the Marvel Multiverse has been destroyed, with multiple alternate realities joining together to form a single patchwork planet known as Battleworld. Doctor Doom soon takes over, declaring himself a “God Emperor,” with the surviving heroes from across multiple universes banning together to try and set things right.

The new Secret Wars RPG expansion will be include:

  • A campaign sandbox framework, allowing players to explore Battleworld as they see fit, while also working towards the larger goal of stopping God Emperor Doom and restoring the Marvel Multiverse.
  • New playable locations, including areas of Battleworld based on the Marvel 2099 universe, the Marvel Zombies universe and other locations from key realities of the Marvel multiverse.
  • New rules for high-power play, including guidance for handling Rank X characters capable of world-shattering feats.
  • New character sheets, designed to work with the new setting, while also reducing rules lookups and streamlining play.

Notably, the book is written by a number of Marvel comic writers and RPG designers, including Matt Forbeck and Alex Irvine, with new maps by cartographer Brian Patterson. It also features new cover art Sean Izaakse and Erick Arciniega.

Final thoughts

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time that a Secret Wars comic book series has had an RPG expansion. In fact, back in 1984, then Dungeons & Dragons publisher TSR released Secret Wars Adventures for their Marvel Super Heroes RPG. Over 40 years later, things have come full circle, with Battleworld appearing once more at the table.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on the new sourcebook in the days ahead and will provide a more detailed review closer to launch. In the meantime, you can pre-order the Marvel Multiverse Secret Wars expansion now from your local game store or on Amazon.
