Star Wars RPG Returns With Reprints of a Dozen Classic Books

French game publisher Asmodee has announced that they’ll soon be returning to a galaxy far, far away, with re-releases of a dozen long-out-of-print Star Wars RPG books. The titles, which were originally released between 2014 and 2019, were first published by Fantasy Flight Games, who gave up the license to the game to Asmodee back in 2020.

It’s good news for fans of the current iteration of the Star Wars RPG who have been concerned about support for the game, given that it’s been almost 6 years since we’ve last seen any new books. You can pick them up in a few weeks from your local game store or the Asmodee website.

So is the Force still strong with these books? Below, we take a look at all the details.

What Is the Star Wars RPG?

The current version of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game was first published by Fantasy Flight Games in 2012. Over the next eight years, the company published almost 60 standalone books, dividing them into several product lines: Edge of the Empire (which is focused on the lawless Outer Rim territories), Age of Rebellion (which takes on the early days of the Rebel Alliance), Force and Destiny (which details the Jedi Order and the Sith), The Force Awakens (which is set prior to the events of the third Star Wars trilogy) and Rise of the Separatists & Collapse of the Republic (which is set during the volatile Clone Wars).

In 2020, however, Fantasy Flight Games shut down their RPG division and fully transferred the license for the game to Asmodee subsidiary Edge Studio. Rather than create a completely new game system however, Asmodee has instead chosen to reprint Fantasy Flight’s original Star Wars RPG content, which they’ve done several times of the years. Much to fans disappointed, however, there has not been published any new material, with the last official supplement published back in 2019.

Mechanically, the Star Wars RPG uses a narrative dice system (a set of custom dice with symbols rather than numbers that generate layered story outcomes). These dice produce combinations of success, failure, advantage, threat, triumph and despair, allowing both players and GMs to interpret results cinematically rather than relying on simple binary pass/fail checks. Skills, talents, species and specializations further influence a character’s dice pools, with each product line also introducing its own narrative game mechanic: Obligation (for Edge of the Empire), Duty (for Age of Rebellion) and Morality (for Force and Destiny).

Notably, over the years several other publishers have produced their own standalone Star Wars RPGs, including West End Games (who maintained the license from 1987 to 1999) and Dungeons & Dragons owner Wizards of the Coast (who had the IP from 2000 to 2010).

Who Is Asmodee?

Asmodee is French publisher and distributor of board games, card games and tabletop role playing games. First founded in 1995 by Marc Nunès, the company initially focused on developing its own titles and supporting smaller game studios,. Over the years, however, they’ve since acquired or merged with numerous other large global game publishers, including Days of Wonder and Fantasy Flight Games. As a result, they now have a large library of well-known games such as Ticket to Ride, Catan, 7 Wonders, Dixit and Pandemic.

In addition to its extensive physical publishing operations, Asmodee has invested heavily in digital adaptations of its games. Its digital arm (originally known as Asmodee Digital and later rebranded as Twin Sails Interactive) has developed and licensed video game versions on many of their popular titles. In 2021, Asmodee also expanded its online reach by acquiring the popular online community platform Board Game Arena.

Final Thoughts

For fans of Fantasy Flight’s Star Wars RPG this reprint wave is welcome news (even though many were hoping to see new titles rather than reprints). That being said, the 12 books slated for reprint have been out of print for years, making them hard to find for reasonable prices on the secondary market. Bringing them back into circulation not only supports existing groups looking to expand their campaigns but also helps preserve the system’s accessibility long-term. It also makes it far more accessible for new players looking to take their first step into a larger world.

You can pick up the Star Wars reprints from your local game store or the Asmodee website.
