Shadowrun First Edition Gets Anniversary Reprint

It’s been almost 40 years since players were first introduced to the neon-soaked world of steel and sorcery that is Shadowrun. Since then, the game since has become not only one of the most iconic tabletop RPGs of all time, but also spawned a pop culture empire of novels, video games, toys and board games.

To celebrate four decades of the sci-fi fantasy game, Catalyst Game Labs has just released the new Shadowrun: First Edition Anniversary Reproduction. It’s a faithful reprint of the original 1989 rulebook, containing both original art and text. You can pick it up now in both PDF and print format via the Catalyst Game site. Below, we deck into all the details.

What is the Shadowrun: First Edition Anniversary Reproduction?

The Shadowrun First Edition Anniversary Reproduction is a 207-page, near-exact reprint of the original first-edition core rulebook published by FASA in 1989 and designed by Bob Charrette, Paul Hume and Tom Dowd.

Rather than updating rules, correct typos or even modernizing the layout, however, the limited-edition release is designed to preserve the game exactly as it was originally published, capturing the raw, experimental energy of late-80s tabletop design.

How much is the Shadowrun First Edition Reprint?

The hardcover and PDF bundle retails for $49.99 USD (not including shipping and handling), although it is an extremely limited print run that will likely sell out quickly. The PDF by itself is retailing for $19.99 USD via the Catalyst Game’s website (although it’s worth noting that a similar product was published in September 2024 on DMsGuild).

Notably, the price of the physical book is actually quite reasonable, as original FASA 1st edition reprints in mint condition can fetch upwards of $100 USD on eBay and the secondary market. It’s possible that this First Edition Anniversary reproduction from Catalyst Game Labs may also see an increase in value on the secondary market, given it’s limited print run.

Why is it worth picking up?

  • A celebration of an RPG classic: This is the book that launched the Shadowrun franchise. Revisiting First Edition is a chance to experience the Sixth World as it was originally imagined, long before decades of new editions and expansions.
  • Strong collector appeal: The hardcover anniversary reproduction is designed for fans who want a physical piece of Shadowrun history on their shelf. It’s also likely something that may see a longterm spike in value given its limited nature.
  • Valuable historical insight: The book offers a clear look at how Shadowrun’s lore and mechanics were first established. Reading First Edition today is a fascinating look back at the early days of game design.

Final thoughts

The Shadowrun First Edition Anniversary Reproduction feels like a unique window into the past, and while it’s clearly a niche product that only a select number of fans will likely appreciate (or even use at the table), for those who do love the Sixth World, it’s a familiar stroll through the neon sprawl of one of TTRPG’s most iconic games.

You can pick up a copy now in both PDF and physical format via the Catalyst Game Lab site.
